Licensed under CC BY 2.0,<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While there are countless examples <strong>les anglophones<\/strong> (English speakers) like myself <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/more-mistakes-thinking-in-english\/\">making mistakes<\/a> with French words, looking at words that <strong>les francophones<\/strong> (French speakers) struggle with offers unique insight into how to better remember <strong>les genres des mots<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Par exemple<\/strong> (for example), ask <strong>un francophone<\/strong> the following question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Est-ce qu&#8217;on dit le spaghetti ou la spaghetti ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Do you say the spaghetti or the spaghetti?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>They will probably give a confused look when they realize they are not <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/buying-a-glass-in-french-dont-forget-the-drink\/\"><strong>s\u00fbr \u00e0 cent pour cent<\/strong><\/a> (one hundred percent sure) which one is correct.<\/p>\n<p>The confusion comes from the fact that most <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-around-the-world-la-francophonie\/\"><strong>francophones<\/strong><\/a> never use <strong>le mot<\/strong> outside of its plural form and <strong>les articles fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (French articles) in their plural form don&#8217;t give any information about <strong>le genre du mot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As a reminder, <strong>voici <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/back-to-the-basics-french-definite-articles\/\">les articles fran\u00e7ais<\/a><\/strong> :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Singulier : Un, une, le, la<br \/>\nPluriel : Des, les<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To get the answer to whether or not <strong>spaghetti<\/strong> is <strong>masculin ou f\u00e9minin<\/strong> in French, you have to ask <strong>ton ami francophone<\/strong> (your French speaking friend) a different question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Est-ce qu&#8217;on dit des spaghettis d\u00e9licieux ou des spaghettis d\u00e9licieuse ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Do you say delicious spaghetti or delicious spaghetti?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Ton ami francophone<\/strong> will quickly realize which one sounds more natural, letting you know <strong>le genre du mot<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Des spaghettis d\u00e9licieux !<br \/>\n<\/strong>Delicious spaghetti!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The trick is even if <strong>les articles<\/strong> don&#8217;t carry any information about <strong>le genre<\/strong>, <strong>les adjectifs<\/strong> still have to agree with the noun!<\/p>\n<p>So whenever you are learning <strong>des <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/amercian-stereotypes-and-traditional-cuisine-hamburger-vocabulary-in-french\/\">nouveaux mots<\/a> fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, remember them with <strong>un adjectif<\/strong> and you&#8217;ll never forget <strong>le genre<\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"234\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/04\/14003934313_d35c627135_z-350x234.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/04\/14003934313_d35c627135_z-350x234.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/04\/14003934313_d35c627135_z.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>Remembering le genre d&#8217;un mot (the gender of a word) is one of the hardest parts of learning French.
