Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/sleeping-better-on-a-french-bed\/\">un nouveau lit<\/a><\/strong> (a new bed) or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/staying-in-the-juice-useful-french-expressions\/\"><strong>une nouvelle expression<\/strong><\/a> (a new expression), realizing I don&#8217;t know how to say something <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> can cause a conversation to suddenly stop as I either try to guess how to say it or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/more-mistakes-thinking-in-english\/\">think in English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the time both options lead to somewhat <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/buying-a-glass-in-french-dont-forget-the-drink\/\">embarrassing learning moments<\/a>. <strong>Par exemple<\/strong> (for exmaple), I was talking with <strong>un coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> (a coworker) who wanted to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/to-do-the-point-fun-french-expressions\/\"><strong>faire le point<\/strong><\/a>. As we entered <strong>la salle de r\u00e9union<\/strong> (the meeting room), I realized I forgot how to say something very simple:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Allumer la lumi\u00e8re<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>To turn on the light<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I stumbled around the words repeating <strong><em>ampoule<\/em><\/strong> <em>(light bulb)<\/em> and<em><strong> lumi\u00e8re<\/strong> (light)<\/em> and luckily <strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> figured out what I was trying to say.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Est-ce que tu peux faire le truc&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Quoi ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tu sais le truc avec l\u2019ampoule.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Je ne comprends pas.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>La lumi\u00e8re ? L\u2019ampoule ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tu veux que j&#8217;allume la lumi\u00e8re ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ah oui c&#8217;est \u00e7a ! D\u00e9sol\u00e9, j&#8217;ai oubli\u00e9 le mot !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Can you do the thing&#8230;<br \/>\nWhat?<br \/>\nYou know the think with the light bulb.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t understand.<br \/>\nThe light? The light bulb?<br \/>\nYou want me to turn on the light?<br \/>\nAh yes that&#8217;s it!
