It can be surprising how ordinary useful words take a long time to learn. Something as useful as un tournevis<\/strong><\/a> (a screwdriver) is often skipped over in textbooks, but when you need one, it’s an important word to know how to say!<\/p>\n

Whether it’s un nouveau lit<\/a><\/strong> (a new bed) or une nouvelle expression<\/strong><\/a> (a new expression), realizing I don’t know how to say something en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> can cause a conversation to suddenly stop as I either try to guess how to say it or think in English<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Most of the time both options lead to somewhat embarrassing learning moments<\/a>. Par exemple<\/strong> (for exmaple), I was talking with un coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> (a coworker) who wanted to faire le point<\/strong><\/a>. As we entered la salle de r\u00e9union<\/strong> (the meeting room), I realized I forgot how to say something very simple:<\/p>\n

Allumer la lumi\u00e8re<\/strong>
\nTo turn on the light<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I stumbled around the words repeating ampoule<\/em><\/strong> (light bulb)<\/em> and lumi\u00e8re<\/strong> (light)<\/em> and luckily mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> figured out what I was trying to say.<\/p>\n

Est-ce que tu peux faire le truc…<\/strong>
\nQuoi ?<\/strong>
\nTu sais le truc avec l\u2019ampoule.<\/strong>
\nJe ne comprends pas.<\/strong>
\nLa lumi\u00e8re ? L\u2019ampoule ?<\/strong>
\nTu veux que j’allume la lumi\u00e8re ?<\/strong>
\nAh oui c’est \u00e7a ! D\u00e9sol\u00e9, j’ai oubli\u00e9 le mot !<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can you do the thing…
\nWhat?
\nYou know the think with the light bulb.
\nI don’t understand.
\nThe light? The light bulb?
\nYou want me to turn on the light?
\nAh yes that’s it! Sorry, I forgot the word!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While it was kind of awkward, the moment sticks out in my memory and always helps me remember how to say allumer la lumi\u00e8re<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

After la r\u00e9union<\/a><\/strong>, mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> tested mon vocabulaire<\/strong> by asking me to do a similar task:<\/p>\n

Tu peux \u00e9teindre la lumi\u00e8re, s’il te pla\u00eet ?<\/strong><\/p>\n
