I turned to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/to-do-the-point-fun-french-expressions\/\"><strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong><\/a> and said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Il pleut des gla\u00e7ons !<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>It&#8217;s raining ice cubes!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That got a nice reaction and after <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/buying-a-glass-in-french-dont-forget-the-drink\/\"><strong>le rire<\/strong><\/a> (the laughter) subsided, <strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> told me:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Non, non, c&#8217;est la gr\u00eale.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>No, no, it&#8217;s hail.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I nodded and tried to correct myself:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Il pleut la gr\u00eale !<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>It&#8217;s raining hail!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My mistake understandably resulted in more laughter from <strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> who corrected me again:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Non, non, non&#8230; Le verbe est gr\u00ealer !<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>No, no, no&#8230; The verb is to hail!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Voil\u00e0 !<\/strong> Finally I knew what to say. With some newly restored confidence I turned to <strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> again and looked them <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/do-you-know-how-to-toast-in-french\/\"><strong>dans les yeux<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Il gr\u00eale !<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>It&#8217;s hailing!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> smiled and after looking out <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/its-prime-time-open-windows-in-french\/\"><strong>la fen\u00eatre<\/strong><\/a> (the window) to watch the summer weather storming outside, we soon went back to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-trajet-and-rising-water-levels-commuting-vocabulary-in-french\/\">work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Later, I wanted to make sure I remembered how to say <strong>les nouveaux mots<\/strong> to avoid making the same mistakes twice. That&#8217;s when I discovered yet another word that makes remembering <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/his-or-her-cup-confusing-possessive-adjectives-in-french\/\"><strong>les genres des mots<\/strong><\/a> (the gender of the words) a little harder.
