Hier <\/strong>(yesterday), summer weather<\/a> stormed through Paris and it started pouring during the humid afternoon. Le temps<\/strong> (the weather) may seem like nothing but small talk, but it ended up teaching me trois nouveaux mots<\/strong> (three new words)!<\/p>\n

It was a dark and stormy apr\u00e8s-midi<\/strong> (afternoon) when it started happening. I turned to mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong><\/a> and said:<\/p>\n

Il pleut des gla\u00e7ons !<\/strong>
\nIt’s raining ice cubes!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

That got a nice reaction and after le rire<\/strong><\/a> (the laughter) subsided, mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> told me:<\/p>\n

Non, non, c’est la gr\u00eale.<\/strong>
\nNo, no, it’s hail.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I nodded and tried to correct myself:<\/p>\n

Il pleut la gr\u00eale !<\/strong>
\nIt’s raining hail!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My mistake understandably resulted in more laughter from mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> who corrected me again:<\/p>\n

Non, non, non… Le verbe est gr\u00ealer !<\/strong>
\nNo, no, no… The verb is to hail!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Voil\u00e0 !<\/strong> Finally I knew what to say. With some newly restored confidence I turned to mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> again and looked them dans les yeux<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n

Il gr\u00eale !<\/strong>
\nIt’s hailing!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> smiled and after looking out la fen\u00eatre<\/strong><\/a> (the window) to watch the summer weather storming outside, we soon went back to work<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Later, I wanted to make sure I remembered how to say les nouveaux mots<\/strong> to avoid making the same mistakes twice. That’s when I discovered yet another word that makes remembering les genres des mots<\/strong><\/a> (the gender of the words) a little harder. There’s a word connected to la gr\u00eale<\/strong><\/em>, but it’s un mot masculin<\/strong> (a masculine word) this time:<\/p>\n

Le gr\u00ealon<\/strong> – Hailstone<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

From une seule faute<\/a><\/strong> (only one mistake) I learned trois nouveaux mots !<\/strong><\/p>\n
