Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Way back in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/22614-2\/\">elementary school<\/a>, I remember wondering why we said <em>a piece of paper<\/em> <strong>en anglais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Elles sont o\u00f9 les autres morceaux?<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Where are the other pieces?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was something I learned to accept and never really thought about until one day I needed to ask for <em>a piece of paper<\/em> <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tu peux me donner <em>une pi\u00e8ce<\/em> de papier ?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The immediate <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/learning-three-new-words-from-one-mistake\/\">look of confusion<\/a> told me I messed something up. <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/buying-a-glass-in-french-dont-forget-the-drink\/\"><strong>Mon ami<\/strong><\/a> (my friend), answered my question with a surprised shout:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Une pi\u00e8ce<\/em> de papier !<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Not understanding why <strong>mon ami<\/strong> repeated what I just said, I didn&#8217;t know how to answer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Oui&#8230;. Tu sais&#8230; du papier mais seulement une page.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Une feuille ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Non ! Je parle pas d&#8217;arbres !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Yes&#8230; You know&#8230; paper but only one page.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A leaf?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>No! I&#8217;m not talking about trees!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Le malentendu<\/strong> (the misunderstanding) was getting worse. I knew <em><strong>une feuille<\/strong> <\/em>was<em> a leaf<\/em>, but I had no idea how it related to <strong>le papier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>J&#8217;ai besoin d&#8217;une page de papier.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui d&#8217;accord. Une feuille de papier alors.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00c7a s\u2019appelle une feuille ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui ! Tout-\u00e0-fait !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I need page of paper.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes alright. So a piece of paper.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That&#8217;s called a piece?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes! Exactly!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I learned a new use for a word I thought could only be used when talking about <strong>les arbres<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Although the conversation may have been awkward, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/allumer-the-light-forgetting-a-useful-word-in-french\/\">confusing process<\/a> of figuring out we were talking about the same thing makes it impossible for me to ever forget how to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Une feuille de papier<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>A piece\/sheet of paper<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course, that wasn&#8217;t the end of my trouble with <strong>le papier<\/strong>. <strong>En France<\/strong> and in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-around-the-world-la-francophonie\/\">many other countries<\/a>, <strong>la taille<\/strong> (the size) of <strong>une feuille de papier<\/strong> is different than what most people from <strong>les \u00c9tats-Unis<\/strong> are used to.<\/p>\n<p>After finally getting <strong>la feuille de papier<\/strong> that I needed, I learned that <strong>une feuille A4<\/strong> (an A4 sheet) does not fit in an American binder!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"273\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/06\/files-1614223_640-350x273.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/06\/files-1614223_640-350x273.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/06\/files-1614223_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>There is a never ending list of incredibly common words that always surprise me when I realize I don&#8217;t know them.
