There is a never ending list of incredibly common words that always surprise me when I realize I don’t know them. The funniest part about these kinds of words is how they sneak up on me. It’s easy to never think about how to say a simple everyday thing until you need to say it<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Way back in elementary school<\/a>, I remember wondering why we said a piece of paper<\/em> en anglais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Elles sont o\u00f9 les autres morceaux?<\/strong>
\nWhere are the other pieces?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was something I learned to accept and never really thought about until one day I needed to ask for a piece of paper<\/em> en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tu peux me donner une pi\u00e8ce<\/em> de papier ?<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The immediate look of confusion<\/a> told me I messed something up. Mon ami<\/strong><\/a> (my friend), answered my question with a surprised shout:<\/p>\n

Une pi\u00e8ce<\/em> de papier !<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Not understanding why mon ami<\/strong> repeated what I just said, I didn’t know how to answer:<\/p>\n

Oui…. Tu sais… du papier mais seulement une page.<\/strong>
\nUne feuille ?<\/strong>
\nNon ! Je parle pas d’arbres !<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes… You know… paper but only one page.<\/em>
\nA leaf?<\/em>
\nNo! I’m not talking about trees!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Le malentendu<\/strong> (the misunderstanding) was getting worse. I knew une feuille<\/strong> <\/em>was a leaf<\/em>, but I had no idea how it related to le papier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

J’ai besoin d’une page de papier.<\/strong>
\nOui d’accord. Une feuille de papier alors.<\/strong>
\n\u00c7a s\u2019appelle une feuille ?<\/strong>
\nOui ! Tout-\u00e0-fait !<\/strong><\/p>\n

I need page of paper.<\/em>
\nYes alright. So a piece of paper.<\/em>
\nThat’s called a piece?<\/em>
\nYes! Exactly!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I learned a new use for a word I thought could only be used when talking about les arbres<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

Although the conversation may have been awkward, the confusing process<\/a> of figuring out we were talking about the same thing makes it impossible for me to ever forget how to say:<\/p>\n

Une feuille de papier<\/strong>
\nA piece\/sheet of paper<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, that wasn’t the end of my trouble with le papier<\/strong>. En France<\/strong> and in many other countries<\/a>, la taille<\/strong> (the size) of une feuille de papier<\/strong> is different than what most people from les \u00c9tats-Unis<\/strong> are used to.<\/p>\n
