The last couple of weeks have been exhausting for me. The long days stretching into even longer nights have left me looking pretty groggy when I arrive au bureau<\/strong><\/a> (at the office) in the morning.<\/p>\n

After a stressful week of work, travel<\/a>, and being on the verge of catching a cold<\/a>, the bags under my eyes and tired gaze led to mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> (my coworker) saying something I didn’t understand:<\/p>\n

\u00c7a va John ? Tu as de petits yeux.<\/strong>
\nYou doing okay John? You have small eyes.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I had never heard l’expression<\/strong>, avoir de petits yeux<\/strong><\/em>, but in the context of an early Monday morning and me struggling to keep my eyes open, it could only mean one thing:<\/p>\n

Tu as l’air fatigu\u00e9<\/a>.<\/strong>
\nYou look tired.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Puisque<\/strong> (since) I was too fatigu\u00e9<\/strong> to ask about the curious expression, I gave a typical response to get on with my day and to try to avoid making any mistakes<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Oui, je suis fatigu\u00e9, mais \u00e7a va.<\/strong>
\nYeah, I’m tired, but I’m fine.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> was satisfied with ma r\u00e9ponse<\/strong> (my response) and I took that to mean I was correct in thinking<\/a> avoir de petits yeux<\/strong> <\/em>means avoir l’air fatigu\u00e9<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n

Le lendemain<\/strong> (the next day), after catching up on some much needed sleep<\/a> I came into the office and for the first time in a few days I wasn’t fighting to keep my eyes open. Mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> was quick to comment:<\/p>\n

Tu as l’air moins fatigu\u00e9 aujourd’hui ! Tu as d\u00fb bien dormi !<\/strong>
\nYou look less tired today! You must have slept well!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sa r\u00e9ponse<\/strong><\/a> solidly reinforced my guess of what la signification<\/strong> (the meaning) of l’expression<\/strong> was and gave me a fun story to think back on whenever I need to remember it.<\/p>\n

Avoir de petits yeux.<\/strong>
\nTo look tired (literally, to have small eyes).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Maintenant<\/strong> (now), I just need to make sure I have the time for a few more fat mornings<\/a> if I want to avoid having de petits yeux<\/strong>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
