Today is le 4 juillet, je Jour de l’Independance, la f\u00eate nationale des \u00c9tat-Unis<\/strong> (the fourth of July, Independence Day, the National Day of the United States). We – and by that I mean les Am\u00e9ricains<\/strong> <\/em>– may not be able to cheer for notre \u00e9quipe de foot<\/strong> (our soccer team) at la Coupe du monde<\/strong><\/a>, but today is still a fun day filled with family, friends, and les feux d’artifice<\/strong><\/a> (fireworks)!<\/p>\n

While looking for something that touches on le patriotisme et le barbeuq<\/a> <\/strong>(patriotism and barbecue), I stumbled upon une version fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (a French version) of l’hymne national am\u00e9ricain<\/strong> (the American national anthem):<\/p>\n

There are a few translations of l’hymne<\/strong>, but the version I want to share comes from a group of musicians<\/a> called les Amies Louisianaises <\/strong>(the Louisianian Friends)<\/em>. David \u00c9mile Marcantel<\/em> who runs Musique Acadienne<\/a><\/em>, a website dedicated to French music from la Louisiane <\/strong>(Louisiana), translated l’hymne<\/strong> and made sure it keeps some of the local flavors.<\/p>\n

Even without understanding les paroles<\/strong> (the lyrics), it’s easy to follow along and recognize the familiar tune<\/a>. After a few words, you can also hear the unique Cajun sound of the singers’ accent<\/a>, which helps color its American origins. To me, that attention the song’s sentimental value gives la traduction<\/strong> (the translation) quite a bit of emotional weight.<\/p>\n

Cette version <\/strong>of la chanson<\/strong> (the song) brings into focus how les \u00c9tats-Unis<\/strong> is home to many native French speakers and how la Louisiane <\/strong>– avec un bout de la Maine<\/strong> (with a little part of Maine) –<\/em> makes the country a part of la francophonie<\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n

Take a moment in between the hamburgers<\/a> and hotdogs to celebrate the Fourth of July en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> with a special version of l’hymne national<\/strong>!<\/p>\n
