La coupe du monde<\/a><\/strong> (the World Cup) is raging on and importantly for French learners, ever since la demi-finale<\/strong> (the semi-finals) un pays francophone<\/strong> (a French speaking country) has had an assured spot en finale<\/strong> (in the finals). With la Belgique<\/strong> (Belgium) being left behind, la Francophonie<\/a><\/strong> marches on with les Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> shouting one thing.<\/p>\n

On est en finale !<\/strong>
\nWe are in the finals!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The excitement around France bringing home the World Cup is being felt from Toulouse to Brest. The Paris-Marseille rivalry is even being eased while everything cheers:<\/p>\n

Allez les Bleus* !<\/strong><\/a>
\nLet’s go France!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

*En fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> the French national team is called les Bleus<\/strong> (the blues), referencing the color of their uniform.<\/em><\/small><\/p>\n

The wave of enthusiasm has les Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> fully embracing their national slogan, especially the third part:<\/p>\n

Libert\u00e9, \u00c9galit\u00e9, Fratinernit\u00e9<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

La d\u00e9vise<\/strong> (the slogan) is easy for un anglophone<\/a><\/strong> (an English speaker) to understand. All three words have English equivalents, even if fraternity has another meaning. La fraternit\u00e9<\/strong> in la devise fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> refers to the idea that is more commonly called brotherhood<\/em>, while the English fraternity<\/em> may make some people think of college associations.<\/p>\n

It’s a perfect storm of le patriotisme<\/strong><\/a> (patriotism) running through the country with World Cup fever reaching a high point just as le 14 juillet<\/strong><\/a> (July 14th, French National Day, Bastille Day) rounds the corner! Adding to that, all the emotions are thoroughly heightened by the sense of la nostalgie<\/strong> (nostagia) that the 2018 World Cup is also giving la France<\/strong>. La fraternit\u00e9<\/strong> is truly being shown by les Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> all over the world as les Bleus<\/strong> inch closer to a historical victory.<\/p>\n

The last time La France a gagn\u00e9 la Coupe du monde<\/strong> (France won the World Cup) was in 1998. Winning it again 20 years later has everyone on edge, hoping to finally bring it back home. After la France<\/strong> solidified its place in the finals, the whole country erupted in a chorus of:<\/p>\n

On est en finale ! On est en finale ! On est finale !<\/strong>
\nWe are in the finals! We are in the finals! We are in the finals!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

There’s something smaller also contributing to the atmosphere of la finale<\/strong>. It’s possible l’Angleterre<\/strong> (England) will be France’s opponent\u00a0 and the addition of a multi-millennia spanning rivalry to the games makes it all the more intense!<\/p>\n

Cependant<\/strong> (however), les Rosbifs<\/strong> <\/em>(Playful slang for British people, literally Roast Beef<\/em>) first have to be good enough to beat l’incroyable \u00e9quipe<\/strong> (the incredible team) from la Croatie<\/strong> (Croatia) !<\/p>\n

No matter who it’s against, all of France is behind les Bleus<\/strong> as they make their way to the final round of la Coupe du monde <\/strong><\/a>!<\/p>\n
