This past month has been intense as countries around the world met en Russie<\/strong> (in Russia) for la Coupe du monde<\/strong> (the World Cup). After the excitement of making it to the finals, la France<\/strong> pushed it to the next level and won le tournoi<\/strong> (the tournament) with a thunderous chant of “Allez les Bleus<\/strong><\/a>” (Let’s go France)<\/em>!<\/p>\n

Dimanche dernier<\/strong> (last Sunday), the whole country erupted in celebration at the end of le match<\/strong>. The game came to a close with la France<\/strong> proving they are les champions du monde<\/strong> (the world champions) in a decisive victory over la Croatie<\/strong>. I happened to be \u00e0 l’a\u00e9roport<\/strong><\/a> (at the airport) during the end and when the clock stopped and la France<\/strong> was declared le vainqueur<\/strong> (the victor), des Fran\u00e7ai<\/strong>s in the food court began singing l’hymne national<\/strong><\/a> (the national anthem).<\/p>\n

It was a magical moment to hear the familiar tune of la Marseillaise<\/strong><\/a> echo throughout l’a\u00e9roport<\/strong><\/a> :<\/p>\n

Allons, enfants de la Patrie,
\nLe jour de gloire est arriv\u00e9\u00a0!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Arise, children of the Fatherland,<\/em>
\nThe day of glory has arrived!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Les f\u00eates<\/strong> (parties) broke out all over the country and bled into the late hours of night. With la finale<\/strong><\/a> falling on un dimanche<\/strong> (a Sunday), the following lundi<\/strong> (Monday) turned into an unofficial day off.<\/p>\n

Among the fun celebrations leading to the French victory were many m\u00e8mes<\/strong> (memes, private jokes<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>mainly on the internet). One that sticks out in my head played on la devise nationale<\/strong> (the national slogan) by replacing la fraternit\u00e9<\/strong> (fraternity, brotherhood) with the name of one of France’s star players:<\/p>\n

Another very fun celebration came from le m\u00e9tro <\/strong><\/a>(the subway). La RATP<\/strong> (R\u00e9gie autonome des transports parisiens<\/strong>, Autonomous Operator of Parisian Transports<\/em>, official name for the public transport operator \u00e0 Paris<\/strong>) created their own m\u00e8me<\/strong><\/a> by “renaming” a few of les stations de m\u00e9tro<\/strong> (the subway stations).<\/p>\n

The new names are des jeux de mots<\/strong> (plays on words) involving le foot fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (French soccer). Les explications<\/strong> (the explanations) provided in the official RATP statement<\/a> may be difficult to understand without deep knowledge of la culture fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (French culture) and le foot<\/strong> (soccer, football). Let’s break it down so everyone learning le fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> can enjoy the celebrations and laugh at les jeux des mots<\/a><\/strong> :<\/p>\n

Avron (ligne 2) devient \u00ab Nous Avron Gagn\u00e9 \u00bb<\/strong>
\nAvron (line 2) becomes “We have won”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“Avron”<\/strong><\/em> sounds and looks similar to “Avons”<\/strong><\/em> the conjugation for the first person plural, Nous<\/strong> (We)<\/em>, of Avoir<\/strong> (To Have)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

This one is a pretty simple jeux de mots<\/strong> where Bercy<\/em> <\/strong>sounds very similar to Merci<\/strong> <\/em>(Thank you). The result leads to everyone understanding Merci les Bleus<\/em> <\/strong>(Thanks to the French team)<\/em> !<\/p>\n

Notre-Dame des Champs (ligne 12) devient \u00ab Notre Didier Deschamps \u00bb<\/strong>

Didier Deschamps<\/em> is le s\u00e9lectionneur<\/strong> (head couch) of les Bleus<\/strong> (the Blues, French expression for the national French team).<\/p>\n
