The game came to a close with <strong>la France<\/strong> proving they are <strong>les champions du monde<\/strong> (the world champions) in a decisive victory over <strong>la Croatie<\/strong>. I happened to be <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-time-to-take-off\/\"><strong>\u00e0 l&#8217;a\u00e9roport<\/strong><\/a> (at the airport) during the end and when the clock stopped and <strong>la France<\/strong> was declared <strong>le vainqueur<\/strong> (the victor), <strong>des Fran\u00e7ai<\/strong>s in the food court began singing<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/la-banniere-etoilee-celebrating-the-fourth-of-july-in-french\/\"><strong> l&#8217;hymne national<\/strong><\/a> (the national anthem).<\/p>\n<p>It was a magical moment to hear the familiar tune of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/why-bastille-day-is-not-really-bastille-day\/\"><strong>la Marseillaise<\/strong><\/a> echo throughout<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/longue-layovers-delayed-flights-in-french\/\"><strong> l&#8217;a\u00e9roport<\/strong><\/a> :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span class=\"nowrap\">Allons, enfants de la Patrie,<br \/>\nLe jour de gloire est arriv\u00e9\u00a0!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Arise, children of the Fatherland,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The day of glory has arrived!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Les f\u00eates<\/strong> (parties) broke out all over the country and bled into the late hours of night. With <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/on-est-en-finale-france-winning-la-coupe-du-monde\/\"><strong>la finale<\/strong><\/a> falling on <strong>un dimanche<\/strong> (a Sunday), the following <strong>lundi<\/strong> (Monday) turned into an unofficial day off.<\/p>\n<p>Among the fun celebrations leading to the French victory were many <strong>m\u00e8mes<\/strong> (memes, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-jokes-where-is-brian\/\"><em><strong>private jokes<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>mainly on the internet). One that sticks out in my head played on <strong>la devise nationale<\/strong> (the national slogan) by replacing <strong>la fraternit\u00e9<\/strong> (fraternity, brotherhood) with the name of one of France&#8217;s star players:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Libert\u00e9, \u00c9galit\u00e9, Mbapp\u00e9<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Liberty, Equality, Mbapp\u00e9<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another very fun celebration came from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-trajet-and-rising-water-levels-commuting-vocabulary-in-french\/\"><strong>le m\u00e9tro <\/strong><\/a>(the subway). <strong>La RATP<\/strong> (<em><strong>R\u00e9gie autonome des transports parisiens<\/strong>, Autonomous Operator of Parisian Transports<\/em>, official name for the public transport operator <strong>\u00e0 Paris<\/strong>) created <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/waves-in-paris-le-metro-is-flooded\/\">their own <strong>m\u00e8me<\/strong><\/a> by &#8220;renaming&#8221; a few of <strong>les stations de m\u00e9tro<\/strong> (the subway stations).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"fr\">[<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MercilesBleus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MercilesBleus<\/a>] La <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RATP?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RATP<\/a> c\u00e9l\u00e8bre l\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/equipedefrance?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@equipedefrance<\/a> sur son r\u00e9seau.
