Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I went to <strong>une cr\u00eaperie<\/strong> (a restaurant that sells <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/how-to-make-french-crepes\/\"><em><strong>cr\u00eapes<\/strong><\/em><\/a>) to have a nice dinner with some friends, <strong>il y a quelques semaines<\/strong> (a few weeks ago). When it was time to order I asked for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/pour-ceux-et-celles-qui-aiment-le-vin\/\"><strong>une bouteille de vin<\/strong><\/a> (a bottle of wine), but wanted to make sure everyone had some water as well. I looked at <strong>le serveur<\/strong> (the waiter) and confidently asked :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Et un cafard d&#8217;eau, s&#8217;il vous pla\u00eet.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>And a cockroach of water, please.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The look on the face of <strong>le serveur<\/strong> made it clear I had <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/learning-three-new-words-from-one-mistake\/\">made a mistake<\/a>. His reaction quickly me realize what I just said and I turned bright red. <strong>Heureusement<\/strong> (luckily), <strong>le serveur<\/strong> understood the mix up and made <strong>une <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-knock-knock-jokes\/\">blague<\/a><\/strong> (a joke) out of the situation.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ce n&#8217;est pas ce type de resto !<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>It&#8217;s not that type of restaurant!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Everyone laughed and I no longer felt bad for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/allumer-the-light-forgetting-a-useful-word-in-french\/\">making a mistake<\/a>. I still wanted to clarify what I wanted to order, just in case there was any confusion. I looked back at <strong>le serveur<\/strong> and somewhat less confidently asked :<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Une carafe d&#8217;eau, s&#8217;il vous pla\u00eet.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>A carafe of water, please.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There was no issue and <strong>le serveur<\/strong> happily took my order.. The initial embarrassment of <strong>le malentendu<\/strong> (the misunderstanding) was intense and hard to get through, but it became <strong>un <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/on-est-les-champions-renaming-le-metro-for-the-french-team\/\"><em>private joke<\/em><\/a><\/strong> between my table and <strong>le serveur<\/strong>.
