This is the fourth post in my on-going series<\/a> of lessons for young people from the depths of the 19th century. The French aren’t the only ones to have had interesting ideas about the roles of\u00a0les gar\u00e7ons et les filles<\/strong> (boys and girls<\/em>) or about how\u00a0les enfants<\/strong> (children\/kids<\/em>) should behave, but these stories give us a unique view into their thinking!<\/p>\n

<\/div><\/div><\/div>La nourrice d’Aline lui avait promis de l’emmener manger du raisin \u00e0 sa vigne;<\/strong><\/td>\n
Aline\u2019s nanny had promised to take her out to eat some grapes from the vine;<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/div><\/div><\/div>mais la m\u00e8re dit qu’il n’\u00e9tait pas raisonnable de sortir par la grande chaleur.<\/strong><\/td>\n
But her mother said that it wasn\u2019t reasonable to go out in such heat.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/div><\/div><\/div>Aline avait si grande envie d’aller avec sa nourrice,<\/strong><\/td>\n
Aline wanted so to go with her nanny,<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/div><\/div><\/div>qu’elle se mit plusieurs fois en route pour la vigne;<\/strong><\/td>\n
That she (even) started out for the vines a number of times;<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
<\/div><\/div><\/div>mais elle s’arr\u00eata toujours au d\u00e9tour du chemin, et revint sur ses pas.<\/strong><\/td>\n
But arriving at the turn in the path, she stopped and retraced her steps back (to the house).<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
