There are many everyday words that can slip by unnoticed in textbooks. Learning how to perfectly conjugate le subjonctif<\/strong><\/a> is important, but realizing you don’t know how to ask for les toilettes<\/a> ou un tourneavis<\/a><\/strong> (the bathroom or a screwdriver) at the wrong time will lead to a difficult situation.<\/p>\n

Le m\u00e9tro<\/strong> (the subway) may sometimes have to deal with unusual obstacles<\/a> or long delays<\/a>, but it’s generally a very reliable and easy way to get around Paris. However, even if the task of riding le m\u00e9tro<\/strong> is relatively painless, it has led to memorable French lessons for me.<\/p>\n

Un jour<\/strong> (one day), while changing stations avec mon ami<\/strong> (with a friend), le m\u00e9tro<\/strong> tested mon vocabulaire fran\u00e7ais<\/strong><\/a> (my French vocabulary). In the underground maze of stairs, escalators, and moving sidewalks I needed to navigate the hallways before successfully changing lines.<\/p>\n

Making our way through the station, I realized we were heading in the wrong direction and wanted to tell mon ami<\/strong>. Le seul probl\u00e8me<\/strong> (the only problem): I needed to use the word escalator<\/em>, but I didn’t know how to say it en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Regarde !<\/strong>
\nQuoi ?<\/strong>
\nEuh…. il faut aller l\u00e0 bas !<\/strong>
\nO\u00f9 ?<\/strong>
\nL\u00e0 bas o\u00f9 il y a un… une \u00e9tag\u00e8re mouvante ?<\/strong>
\nUne quoi ?<\/strong>
\nC’est comme une \u00e9tag\u00e8re, mais c’est automatique….<\/strong>
\nQuoi ?<\/strong>
\nSuis-moi !<\/strong><\/p>\n

Look!<\/em>
\nWhat?<\/em>
\nUh… we need to go over there!<\/em>
\nWhere?<\/em>
\nOver there where there’s a… a moving shelf?<\/em>
\nA what?<\/em>
\nIt’s like a shelf, but it’s automatic….<\/em>

Mon ami<\/strong> was confused<\/a>, but didn’t want to let me wander off on my own. Une fois<\/strong> (once) we arrived at the escalator the laughter started:<\/p>\n

Un escalator !<\/strong>
\nAh.. ouais c’est \u00e7a…. Il n’y a pas d’autre nom pour \u00e7a en fran\u00e7ais ?<\/strong>
\nEuh, tu peux dire un escalier m\u00e9canique, mais un escalator se dit aussi.<\/strong>
\nD’accord ! Merci !<\/strong>
\nMais c’est bien un escalier m\u00e9canique ! Pas une \u00e9tag\u00e8re !<\/strong><\/p>\n

An escalator!<\/em>
\nAh… yeah that’s right…. There isn’t another word for that in French?<\/em>
\nUh, you can say mechanical stairs, but escalator is said as well.<\/em>
\nAlright! Thanks!<\/em>
\nBut it’s mechanical stairs! Not a shelf!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I then realized I had made une faute<\/strong><\/a> (a mistake) when I first tried to say where we need to go. The words for stairs<\/em> and shelf<\/em> sound similar en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> and I confused them when trying to explain un escalator<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

By the time we reached the top of l’escalator<\/strong>, I was embarrassed<\/a> from making such a silly faute<\/strong>, but knew I would not forget how to say it again. The whole exchange was a fun example of how thinking in English<\/a> can sometimes help with new French vocabulary.<\/p>\n

Au moins<\/strong> (at least), I didn’t mix up les genres des mots<\/strong><\/a> (the gender of the words)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
