Aujourd’hui <\/strong>(today), I want to introduce you all to C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/strong> (Pirate Heart), <\/em>une chanteuse<\/strong> (a singer) from le Qu\u00e9bec<\/a><\/strong>. Sa carri\u00e8re<\/strong> (her career) started in 2008, and like la musicienne<\/strong> (the musician), Joyce Jonathan<\/em><\/a>, she began by posting her music sur internet<\/strong> (on the internet) before becoming a super star.<\/p>\n

C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/strong> <\/em>is obviously not her real name. The artist’s name is Beatrice Martin<\/em> and she originally used une version<\/strong> (a version) of her stage name en anglais<\/strong> (in English), Her Pirate Heart<\/em>, but decided to change it when she began writing songs en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Le choix<\/strong> (the choice) of using a stage name was a conscious one. She wanted to build up la marque<\/a><\/strong> (the brand) of her music and not limit herself to being known as a solo musician.<\/p>\n

La musique de C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/em><\/strong> (Coeur de Pirate<\/em>‘s music) often touches on love and relationships and there is a lot of heart in her unique voice. Sa musique<\/strong> makes it easy to feel the emotions of her songs even if you don’t understand all of les paroles<\/strong> (the lyrics).<\/p>\n

L’une de mes chansons pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9es<\/strong> (on of my favorite songs) is from her second album, Blonde<\/strong> <\/em>(Blonde<\/strong> <\/em>is slang for girlfriend<\/em> in Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong><\/a>), Place de la R\u00e9publique<\/strong><\/em> (Republic Square).<\/p>\n

La place de la R\u00e9publique<\/strong> is also a real place! It’s a large square \u00e0 Paris<\/strong><\/a> located between les 3e, 10e et 11e arrondissements<\/strong> (the 3rd, 10th, and 11th districts). I can only guess it has a personal meaning to C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/strong><\/em>, but it does provide a very romantic<\/a> view of the city, helping set the lovesick setting of la chanson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Place de la R\u00e9publique<\/em> <\/strong>was the third single for Blonde<\/strong><\/em>, but it was actually the first song she wrote for the album. La chanson<\/strong> began as an untitled piece she would perform while on tour for her first album.<\/p>\n

The album is centered around C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/strong><\/em>‘s vocals and piano playing and Place de la R\u00e9publique<\/strong> <\/em>exemplifies that style, driving home the emotional feel la chanteuse<\/strong> is known for.<\/p>\n

Take a moment to listen to la chanson and enjoy the wonderful music of C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/strong><\/em>. While she is from le Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong>, there should be no issues understanding l’accent<\/strong><\/a> (the accent) and an easy addition to any French learners playlist.<\/p>\n
