Public Domain.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After following the reference in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/fall-in-love-with-a-french-pop-song-joyce-jonathan-ca-ira\/\"><strong>la chanson de <\/strong><em>Joyce Jonathan<\/em><\/a> (Joyce Jonathan&#8217;s song), we learned about <strong>le po\u00e8te fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (the French Poet), <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/beauty-in-french-introducing-the-poet-charles-baudelaire\/\"><em>Charles Baudelaire<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the post on <strong>le po\u00e8te fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, I added a small side note about how he was one of the first people to translate <em>Edgar Allan Poe<\/em> <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>. <strong>Ces traductions<\/strong> (those translations) allowed <em>Poe<\/em>&#8216;s work spread across <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-around-the-world-la-francophonie\/\"><strong>la francophonie<\/strong><\/a> and led to many people around the world appreciating <strong>le po\u00e8te am\u00e9ricain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For French learners, those same translations offer a fun way to practice <strong>la langue<\/strong> with something more familiar than <strong>la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (French Litterature).<\/p>\n<p><em>Poe<\/em>&#8216;s writing is generally a winding narrative, which means most of <strong>les traductions<\/strong> by <em>Baudelaire<\/em> are very long. For eager French learners, that translates into a lot of material, but <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-fortunate-word-i-never-remember-how-to-spell-in-french\/\"><strong>malheureusement<\/strong><\/a> (unfortunately), it also takes a very long time to get through the stories.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than slowly working through <strong>un po\u00e8me<\/strong>, I wanted to share <strong>la premi\u00e8re strophe<\/strong> (the first stanza) of <em><strong>Le Corbeau<\/strong><\/em> (The Raven). It&#8217;s <strong>un po\u00e8me<\/strong> every <strong>anglophone<\/strong> (English speaker) is familiar with and is a fun way to make the famous lines come to life <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u00ab Une fois, sur le minuit lugubre, pendant que je m\u00e9ditais, faible et fatigu\u00e9, sur maint pr\u00e9cieux et curieux volume d\u2019une doctrine oubli\u00e9e, pendant que je donnais de la t\u00eate, presque assoupi, soudain il se fit un tapotement, comme de quelqu\u2019un frappant doucement, frappant \u00e0 la porte de ma chambre. \u00ab C\u2019est quelque visiteur, \u2014 murmurai-je, \u2014 qui frappe \u00e0 la porte de ma chambre ; ce n\u2019est que cela, et rien de plus. \u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore, While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. \u201c\u2009\u2019Tis some visiter,\u201d I muttered, \u201ctapping at my chamber door \u2014 Only this, and nothing more.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Si vous voulez lire le reste<\/strong> (if you want to read the rest), check out <em>Baudelaire<\/em>&#8216;s full translation in <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Histoires_grotesques_et_s%C3%A9rieuses\/La_Gen%C3%A8se_d%E2%80%99un_po%C3%A8me\"><em><strong>La Gen\u00e8se d\u2019un po\u00ebme<\/strong><\/em><\/a> <em>(The Genesis of a Poem)<\/em>.
