It’s October and for everyone outre Atlantique<\/strong>, (over the Atlantic, saying for “in North America”<\/em>) that immediately brings up spooky thoughts of ghosts and des bons bons<\/strong> (candy). Cependant<\/strong> (however), the “traditional” Halloween I grew up with aux<\/a> \u00c9tats-Unis<\/strong> (in the United States) is not really traditionally a thing en France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Trick or treating and dressing up in scary costumes are staples of the October holiday en Am\u00e9rique du Nord<\/a><\/strong> (in North America) and is all seen as very foreign for most people outside the continent. Some places around the world have a similar holiday in la Toussaint<\/strong> (All Saints’ Day), but it’s more seen as a religious holiday or simply a day off work.<\/p>\n

While Halloween as I know it is picking up steam en Europe<\/strong>, it is still far from traditional and is still seen as an inherently American import. Cela dit<\/strong> (that said), there is a spooky source of Halloween traditions en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, it just comes from another part of la francophonie<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Au Canada<\/strong><\/a> (in Canada), l’Halloween<\/strong> is celebrated and in some parts of the country it’s celebrated en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>. There is even a very fun song many people grow up with to set the French mood:<\/p>\n

La chanson<\/a><\/strong> (the song) was written by Matt Maxwell in 1981 who was then a teacher in Halifax trying to get his students interested in la langue fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (the French language). Looking for fun things to do en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> the October holiday ended up providing the perfect inspiration.<\/p>\n

C’est l’Halloween<\/strong><\/em> was so successful that he quit his job and became a full time performer. He toured around the country performing children’s music<\/a> for 15 years after he left teaching<\/a> and made a lasting impact on la culture canadienne<\/strong> (Canadian culture).<\/p>\n

It’s a fun little tune<\/a> that is easy to sing along to and teaches seasonally appropriate vocabulary like la sorci\u00e8re, le fant\u00f4me et les m\u00e9chants esprits<\/strong> (witch, ghost, and evil spirits).<\/p>\n
