Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Living <strong>en France<\/strong>, the US midterm elections meant more than making sure my absentee ballot was received and that all the circles were filled in properly. The day was also filled with an unexpected challenge when I needed to explain <strong>les \u00e9lections de mi-mandat<\/strong> and how I was able to vote in them while abroad.<\/p>\n<p>When the topic first came up, I quickly realized that I needed to learn some <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/useful-french-vocabulary-the-head-and-face\/\">vocabulary<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tu peux voter depuis la France ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui, il faut juste demander qu&#8217;on te donne un ballot.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Un ballot ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui, il faut avoir un ballot pour voter.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tu es s\u00e9rieux ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui, j&#8217;imagine c&#8217;est pareil en France !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Arr\u00eate de plaisanter !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mais ce n&#8217;est pas <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-jokes-where-is-brian\/\">une blague<\/a> !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tu as besoin d&#8217;un idiot pour pouvoir voter ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Comment ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mais c&#8217;est ce que tu viens de dire !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>You can vote from France?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, you just have to ask for a dimwit.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A dimwit?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, you need a dimwit to vote.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Are you serious?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, I imagine it&#8217;s the same in France!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Stop joking!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But it&#8217;s not a joke!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>You need an idiot to be able to vote?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>What?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>But it&#8217;s what you just said!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At that moment it became clear I had made a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/learning-three-new-words-from-one-mistake\/\">mistake<\/a> and said something <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/mixing-up-chocolate-croissants-and-croissant-chocolates-in-french\/\">weird<\/a> <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Un ballot<\/strong> in French is not <em>a ballot<\/em> in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/more-mistakes-thinking-in-english\/\">English<\/a>. It has many meanings, but the most unfortunate one for <strong>les anglophones<\/strong> (English speakers) who are trying to explain <strong>le vote<\/strong> (voting) is <em>dimwit<\/em> or <em>fool<\/em>. It&#8217;s a rather soft and somewhat outdated insult that will turn a few heads if you accidentally use it in such a serious context.<\/p>\n<p>Once I collected my thoughts, I then had to try to make myself understood so <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/early-mornings-and-tired-eyes-sleepy-french-expression\/\"><strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong><\/a> (my coworker) didn&#8217;t think I was crazy. I wanted to learn the right <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-time-to-take-off\/\">vocabulary<\/a> so my goal was to try to make them say the word I needed to learn:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Non ! Je voulais dire le papier o\u00f9 on marque ses choix.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Un bulletin de vote ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui ! Au moins je pense que c&#8217;est \u00e7a&#8230; On peut en demander un \u00e0 distance et apr\u00e8s il suffit de l&#8217;envoyer par la poste.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ah oui, je vois.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>No! I wanted to say the paper where you mark your choices.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>A ballot paper?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes! At least I think that&#8217;s it&#8230; You can ask for one remotely and after you just need to send it by mail.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah yes, I see.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I clearly made my point and learned how to say <strong>un bulletin de vote<\/strong>, but I still wasn&#8217;t sure how to say <strong>le vote par procuration<\/strong> (absentee ballot).
