Last week<\/a> I shared a short excerpt from the Bulletin de Lille<\/strong>, a biweekly paper printed under the direction of the German Command in Lille. I love how the exchange illustrates the delicate dance between occupied and occupier that can arise in such situations. This week we look at a another except that highlights another aspect of life in war-time.<\/p>\n

Pain.<\/strong>\u00a0– Il est rappel\u00e9 que la ration de pain sera port\u00e9e, \u00e0 partir du 3 janvier prochain, \u00e0 2k. 750 par semaine et par bouche, soit une augmentation de 500 grammes.<\/td>\nBread. – Reminder that bread rations will, beginning on January 3, be increased to 2k. 750 a week and by mouth, or an increase of 500 grams.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Cette mesure n’est pas due \u00e0 la surabondance de farine, et elle ne pourrait\u00a0\u00eatre appliqu\u00e9e d\u00e9finitivement qu’en r\u00e9alisant toutes les \u00e9conomies possibles.<\/td>\nThis increase is not a result of an over-abundance of flour, and cannot be fully implemented unless all savings are realized.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

[…] Les personnes qui se serviraient ou tenteraient de se servir de ces cartes, s’exposent \u00e0 une suppression totale de pain et de denr\u00e9es am\u00e9ricaines pendant quinze jours au minimum.<\/td>\nIn addition, a certain number of evacuee cards and bonus cards have not been turned in or updated. […] Any person who uses or tries to use these cards, will expose themself to a loss of bread and all American goods of at least two weeks (15 days).<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Enfin, le Comit\u00e9 sera reconnaissant aux personnes que n’utiliseront pas toute la nouvelle ration, de ne pas pr\u00e9lever la quantit\u00e9 totale de pain \u00e0 laquelle elles ont droit. Ce sera l’un des meilleurs moyens de faire les \u00e9conomies de farine indispensables pour assurer d\u00e9finitivement l’augmentation qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 accord\u00e9e pas la C.R.B \u00e0 nos concitoyens, pour les aider \u00e0 traverser la p\u00e9riode la plus dure de l’ann\u00e9e.<\/td>\nFinally, the Committee thanks those who do not use all of their rations for not taking the full ration due them. This will be the best way to save flour and to ensure the increase provided by the C.R.B to our fellow citizens, to help them make it through the most difficult part of the year.<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
