From Paris and into the countryside, these past few weeks have seen growing unrest which culminated in a rash of burned cars, smashed store windows, and injuries across Paris this past Sunday.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30942 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/12\/yellow-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Les gilets jaunes<\/strong> \/ The yellow vests<\/p>\n<p>The movement, which started earlier in November, gets its name from the bright yellow vests that protesters have adopted\u00a0<b>telle une cocarde* pour un nouvel \u00e2ge\u00a0<\/b>(<em>like a rosette for a new era<\/em>). From rather banal beginnings (all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.service-public.fr\/particuliers\/vosdroits\/F19459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French drivers are required to have a bright yellow safety vest<\/a> in their car for emergencies) the vest has become a sign of growing frustration among working-class French\u00a0<strong>citoyens<\/strong> (<em>citizens).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As often happens in France (1789, 1830, 1871, mai &#8217;68, &#8230;) what started with unrest has devolved into violence that as of today has resulted in over 260 injuries and at least three deaths &#8230; not to mention the destruction of property including\u00a0<b>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/medias\/2018\/12\/03\/20004-20181203ARTFIG00249-apres-les-gilets-jaunes-lourde-facture-pour-le-mobilier-urbain-parisien.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 abribus endommag\u00e9s, 16 kiosques \u00e0 journaux d\u00e9grad\u00e9s et 7 m\u00e2ts drapeaux d\u00e9t\u00e9rior\u00e9s<\/a>&#8221; <\/b>(<em>100 bus shelters damaged, 16 newspaper stands defaced, and 7 flag poles ruined).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Events are moving fast, and understanding all of the details is complicated. The conflict is even playing out in cyberspace where the conflict has spilled onto the newly created <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mouvement_des_Gilets_jaunes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia page<\/a>\u00a0on the events which carries the following warning:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Les contributeurs sont tenues de ne pas participer \u00e0 une guerre d&#8217;\u00e9dition sous peine de blocage.&#8221;<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>Contributors are asked to refrain from &#8216;editing wars&#8217; or risk being blocked.<\/em> [Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mouvement_des_Gilets_jaunes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<p>In the real world, things have gotten so tense that President Macron and his government have even considered declaring a state of emergency. As reported in Le Monde,\u00a0<strong>le ministre de l&#8217;int\u00e9rieur, Christophe Castaner, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/politique\/live\/2018\/12\/03\/gilets-jaunes-le-gouvernement-empetre-dans-une-crise-majeure-suivez-les-reactions-en-direct_5391837_823448.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estime que face \u00e0 des nouvelles formes de violence, il faut des moyens diff\u00e9rents<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><em>(the Interior Minister, Christophe Castaner, feels that different methods are required to confront new forms of violence)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The events are significant enough that they are getting a fair amount of coverage in the international press, but you can also follow the latest in French at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.lemonde.fr<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberation.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.liberation.fr<\/a>,\u00a0 or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.france24.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: The recent protests appear to already be shifting policy in France. As of Tuesday 12\/4 the French government has announced that the fuel-tax increases planned for January will be suspended for six months.<\/p>\n<p>*\u00a0<em>La cocarde<\/em> (tricolor rosette), one of the many symbols of the French Republic, traces its origins to the Revolution.
