Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;m <strong>un expert<\/strong> at learning the hard way that I don&#8217;t know how to say something. Whether it&#8217;s looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/allumer-the-light-forgetting-a-useful-word-in-french\/\"><strong>l&#8217;interrupteur<\/strong><\/a> (the light switch) or trying to order <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/buying-a-glass-in-french-dont-forget-the-drink\/\"><strong>un verre<\/strong><\/a> (a glass), I find new ways to say something incorrectly all the time.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/learning-voting-vocabulary-with-a-ballot-mistake\/\">making mistakes<\/a>, I find mispronouncing something harder to deal with than realizing I&#8217;m lacking vocabulary. After all, when <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/help-attention-urgence\/\"><strong>un m\u00e9decin<\/strong><\/a> (a doctor) explains something in English, I&#8217;m often lost in a sea of unknown vocabulary. <strong>L&#8217;id\u00e9e<\/strong> (the idea) being that even in my native language it&#8217;s easy to lack the vocabulary to talk about certain subjects.<\/p>\n<p>So when I realized I don&#8217;t really know how to talk about babies <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, I saw it as a chance to learn and improve my vocabulary. Because whether it&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/little-red-chaperon-rouge-fairy-tale-french\/\">Les comptines<\/a> ou les t\u00e9tines<\/strong> (nursery rhymes<\/em> <em>or pacifiers)<\/em>, there&#8217;s a whole world of baby words to learn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-fortunate-word-i-never-remember-how-to-spell-in-french\/\"><strong>Malheureusement<\/strong><\/a> (unfortunately), trying to bring up the subject with <strong>un ami<\/strong> (a friend) didn&#8217;t get very far:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Comment on parle des b\u00e9b\u00e9s ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>How do you talk about babies?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I ended up simply needing to take the time to learn new words if I was going to talk about <strong>ma <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-music-for-your-petite-soeur-ben-loncle-soul\/\">petite soeur<\/a> et son nouveau-n\u00e9e <\/strong>(my little sister and her newborn).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le mot<\/strong> (the word) that caught my attention the most was one that I would have never guessed. The baby sounds, <em>goo goo ga ga<\/em>, aren&#8217;t usually thought about seriously, but the same sounds are said very differently <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Areu Areu<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Goo goo ga ga<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The differences in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-pronunciation-and-squirrels\/\"><strong>la prononciation fran\u00e7aise<\/strong><\/a> (French pronunciation) can start to be heard in <strong>les b\u00e9b\u00e9s <\/strong>(babies)! <em><strong>Areu Areu<\/strong> <\/em>has all the difficult French sounds in it and can make <strong>les b\u00e9b\u00e9s fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> sound very French after only a few months.<\/p>\n<p>After taking the time to learn <strong>le vocabulaire<\/strong>, I can now keep <strong>mes amis<\/strong> up to date on <strong>ma nouvelle ni\u00e8ce<\/strong> (my new niece) and the baby world she lives in.
