After telling my family the embarrassing story of mispronouncing oncle<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (uncle), I may have accidentally given myself a knew nickname. Unfortunately for me, la langue fran\u00e7aise<\/strong> (the French language) was hiding even more baby problems!<\/p>\n

I’m un expert<\/strong> at learning the hard way that I don’t know how to say something. Whether it’s looking for l’interrupteur<\/strong><\/a> (the light switch) or trying to order un verre<\/strong><\/a> (a glass), I find new ways to say something incorrectly all the time.<\/p>\n

When it comes to making mistakes<\/a>, I find mispronouncing something harder to deal with than realizing I’m lacking vocabulary. After all, when un m\u00e9decin<\/strong><\/a> (a doctor) explains something in English, I’m often lost in a sea of unknown vocabulary. L’id\u00e9e<\/strong> (the idea) being that even in my native language it’s easy to lack the vocabulary to talk about certain subjects.<\/p>\n

So when I realized I don’t really know how to talk about babies en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>, I saw it as a chance to learn and improve my vocabulary. Because whether it’s Les comptines<\/a> ou les t\u00e9tines<\/strong> (nursery rhymes<\/em> or pacifiers)<\/em>, there’s a whole world of baby words to learn.<\/p>\n

Malheureusement<\/strong><\/a> (unfortunately), trying to bring up the subject with un ami<\/strong> (a friend) didn’t get very far:<\/p>\n

I ended up simply needing to take the time to learn new words if I was going to talk about ma petite soeur<\/a> et son nouveau-n\u00e9e <\/strong>(my little sister and her newborn).<\/p>\n

Le mot<\/strong> (the word) that caught my attention the most was one that I would have never guessed. The baby sounds, goo goo ga ga<\/em>, aren’t usually thought about seriously, but the same sounds are said very differently en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

The differences in la prononciation fran\u00e7aise<\/strong><\/a> (French pronunciation) can start to be heard in les b\u00e9b\u00e9s <\/strong>(babies)! Areu Areu<\/strong> <\/em>has all the difficult French sounds in it and can make les b\u00e9b\u00e9s fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> sound very French after only a few months.<\/p>\n

After taking the time to learn le vocabulaire<\/strong>, I can now keep mes amis<\/strong> up to date on ma nouvelle ni\u00e8ce<\/strong> (my new niece) and the baby world she lives in. Her life should stay pretty simple for awhile, but I look forward to learning new words as she gets older.<\/p>\n
