It\u2019s been about a month since I first reported<\/a> on les<\/strong> manifestations <\/strong>(the<\/em> protests)<\/em> in France being led (?) by les gilets jaunes<\/strong> (the yellow vests)<\/em>. Sadly, while the ampleur<\/strong> (scale\/volume\/size)<\/em> of the manifestations <\/strong>has gone down since then, they have become more violent.<\/p>\n

Since their peak in December, the weekly protests by les gilets jaunes <\/strong>have dwindled in size, but not in impact. In any protest movement, the line between legitimate protester and les casseurs <\/strong>(thugs<\/em>, the word has its origins in the verb casser \/ to break<\/em>) can be difficult to see, but as the numbers of protesters has decreased, the level of violence has increased as you can see in this report that highlights both individual acts of extreme violence like l\u2019ex-boxeur professionnel <\/strong>(the ex-professional boxer)<\/em> seen at the start of this clip who attacks two different police or group attacks like the one in which un chariot \u00e9l\u00e9vateur<\/strong> (a fork-lift)<\/em> was used to break into the office of the porte-paroles <\/strong>(spokesperson) <\/em>of the French government.<\/p>\n

As you can imagine, knowing what is driving a movement like les gilets jaunes <\/strong>can be difficile<\/strong> (difficult)<\/em> when there are no clear leaders. In order to get to the root causes, Emmanuel Macron, le pr\u00e9sident de la R\u00e9publique <\/strong>(the French president)<\/em> has proposed a grand d\u00e9bat national<\/strong> (a great national debate)<\/em> on l\u2019\u00e9cologie, la fiscalit\u00e9, la d\u00e9mocratie, et l\u2019organisation de l\u2019Etat<\/strong> (the environment, the economy, democracy, and the structure of the country<\/em>) but le fran\u00e7ais moyen<\/strong> (the average Fench-person)<\/em> has more immediate concerns on their mind. Notable among their concerns: l\u2019augmentation du smic <\/strong>(SMIC is le salaire minimum interprofessionnel de croissance <\/em>so this would be an increase to the minimum wage)<\/em> and a reapplication of l\u2019ISF<\/strong> (l\u2019Imp\u00f4t de Solidarit\u00e9 sur la Fortune, un imp\u00f4t sur les grandes fortunes<\/em> \/ tax on very large fortunes)<\/em>.<\/p>\n
