Not only does it get you prepared for any impromptu karaoke nights with les Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (French people), but it also makes it easier to find une chanson<\/strong><\/a> (a song) that you genuinely enjoy and want to listen to and not just use for practice!<\/p>\n

I’ve covered many styles of chansons<\/strong> that I personally use to help make learning le fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> fun an interesting. We’ve gone over big hits like Formidable<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>by Stromae<\/em> and Place de la r\u00e9publique<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by C\u0153ur de Pirate<\/em>, but there’s one genre that I realized is missing:<\/p>\n

There is one big hit from la d\u00e9cennie<\/strong> (the decade) that immediately jumped out to me once I realized the hole in the blog’s musical backlog and it comes from une artiste fran\u00e7aise<\/a><\/strong> who perfectly captures the wacky and sometimes tacky style and feel:<\/p>\n

Desireless<\/strong><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Desireless<\/strong> <\/em>is the stage name<\/a> of Claudie Fritsch<\/em>–Mentrop, <\/em>one of the the biggest 80s stars in France. Desireless<\/strong> <\/em>started using the name in 1986 at the time she created son<\/a> personnage androgyne et froid<\/strong> (her cold and androgynous persona), right before her career skyrocketed with les tubes <\/strong>(the hits) that everyone en France<\/strong> knows today. The matching sound and style gave everything a unified and dramatic image that the essence of cool at the time.<\/p>\n

Going with that over the top look was an essential 80s classic with le tube<\/strong><\/a> that gave her star status:<\/p>\n

La chanson<\/strong> is a fun, perfectly 80s, piece of music, complete with melodramatic music video. It came out in 1986 right when Desireless <\/em><\/strong>started using her new personnage<\/strong>, but wasn’t featured on a full album until the release of Fran\u00e7ois<\/strong> <\/em>in 1989. Voyage, voyage<\/strong><\/em> is also one of the rare singles en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> to obtain international success, climbing charts across Europe!<\/p>\n
