There’s some vocabulary that can be hard to talk about. Not because it’s difficult or different, but because it’s tied to emotions, memories, or history<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One of the hardest things to talk about, regardless of the language, is someone close passing. It can be hard to think of anything when les emotions<\/strong> are fresh and les larmes<\/strong> (the tears) have yet to dry.<\/p>\n

When I unfortunately needed to use ce genre de vocabulaire<\/a><\/strong> (this kind of vocabulary) with mes amis et mes coll\u00e8gues<\/strong> (my friends and coworkers), there was a lesson waiting in la tristesse<\/strong> (the sadness).<\/p>\n

When someone has recently passed, the formal way to refer to them en anglais<\/strong> is with the late<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The late David Bowie<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So when I needed to talk about my late grandfather and his passing, I didn’t have the mind to not think in English<\/a> and ended up saying something very odd to mon ami<\/a><\/strong>:<\/p>\n

\u00c7a va John ?<\/strong>
\nNon… Mon grand p\u00e8re est en retard.<\/strong>
\nIl est en retard ? Il vient en France ?<\/strong><\/p>\n

You alright John?<\/em>
\nNo… My grandfather is late.<\/em>
\nHe’s late? Is he coming to France?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In retrospect I see the confusion and humor in such a statement, but at the time all I could do was be as blunt as possible:<\/p>\n

Il est mort.<\/strong>
\nJe suis d\u00e9sol\u00e9… Je savais pas que tu voulais dire \u00e7a. Mes condol\u00e9ances.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He is dead.<\/em>
\nI am sorry… I didn’t know you wanted to say that. My condolences.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I was too triste<\/strong> (sad) to care about finding out the proper way to say what I wanted. However, when I heard overheard mon ami<\/strong><\/a> explaining the situation they used a term I wasn’t familiar with:<\/p>\n

Feu son grand p\u00e8re<\/strong>
\nHis late grandfather<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I accidentally learned of ma faute<\/a><\/strong> (my mistake) and even though I heard the right way to say what I wanted, I didn’t understand how feu<\/strong> <\/em>worked until much, much later.<\/p>\n

Sometime after the awkward exchange with mon ami<\/strong>, I saw David Bowie mentioned in the news with a term I hadn’t thought of in months:<\/p>\n

In a more clear mental state, I clearly remembered le mot<\/strong> (the word). I thought the idea of using fire (feu<\/strong>)<\/em> to refer to someone who has recently passed as very poetic<\/a> and the clear imagery of a flame slowly burning out made le vocabulaire<\/strong> stick in my head like a bright light.<\/p>\n

It’s also not all what it’s supposed to mean or where feu<\/strong> <\/em>in this context comes from. Feu<\/strong> <\/em>comes from le latin<\/strong><\/a> (latin) word fatum<\/em> (destiny) via fatutus<\/em> which used to be strongly connected to misfortune<\/a> and other grim things before becoming associated with la mort<\/strong> (death). Several centuries later it gained its modern meaning of having recently deceased<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Unlike English term the late<\/em>, feu<\/strong> <\/em>can be used for both for people and things. So something like:<\/p>\n

Feu le restaurant<\/strong>
\nThe late restaurant<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

is perfectly fine en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

L’adjectif<\/strong> (the adjectif) can get a bit more complex<\/a>, but the rules are easy. When feu<\/strong> <\/em>is used after an article, it has to agree with the noun it’s modifying and if it’s used without or before an article then it’s always simply feu<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n

How I originally remembered le vocabulaire<\/strong> could not be farther from what it actually means or where it comes from, but it still worked as a useful way to remember le mot<\/strong>. It may seem strange, but similar things often help make learning le vocaublaire<\/strong><\/a> easier, even if it’s for topics that are difficult to talk about.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"\"\"
