As I was recently following up on news about les Gilets jaunes <\/strong><\/a>I stumbled across a great resource for anyone interested in understanding what les fran\u00e7ais pensent<\/strong> (the French think<\/em>) on any number of different topics.<\/p>\n

There’s no better way to know what someone is thinking then to ask them. That’s just what IFOP<\/strong> <\/em>(Institut d\u2019\u00c9tudes Opinion et Marketing en France et \u00e0 l’International<\/strong> \/\u00a0Institute for the Study of Opinion and Marketing in France and Internationally) <\/em>has done for over 80 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The verb penser<\/em> means\u00a0to think. <\/em>It is a regular -er verb that is conjugated in the present tense as\u00a0je pense, tu penses, il\/elle\/on pense, nous pensons, vous pensez, ils\/elles pensent. <\/em>Click here to see all the different forms of <\/a>penser.<\/em><\/div>\n

IFOP\u00a0m\u00e8ne des enqu\u00eates aupr\u00e8s des populations repr\u00e9sentatives\u00a0<\/b>(conducts surveys of representative groups<\/em>) to understand what\u00a0le fran\u00e7ais moyen\u00a0<\/strong>(the average French person<\/em>) thinks about topics ranging from\u00a0les actualit\u00e9s, la politique, la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, et le climat social<\/strong> (current events, politics, society, and social attitudes).<\/em><\/p>\n

Recent findings include the fact that for another year in a row the singer Jean-Jacques Goldman<\/a> est la\u00a0personnalit\u00e9 pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e* des Fran\u00e7ais<\/a><\/b> (is the favorite celebrity of the French), <\/em>that (as of mid-February after 14 weekends of protests) 50% of French people still support les Gilets jaunes<\/strong><\/a>, 74% des Fran\u00e7ais pensent que les consommateurs peuvent avoir confiance dans les agriculteurs<\/a><\/strong> (74% of French people think that consumers can have confidence in farmers\/growers<\/em>), and that while 84% of French prefer\u00a0un pain au chocolat<\/strong><\/a> regionally others still prefer their\u00a0chocolatine<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pain au chocolat<\/em> and chocolatine <\/em>are not the only regional differences you’ll find in France as Elizabeth told us back in 2016<\/a> … or as you can see from this recent video from franceinfo<\/a>. Other terms you’ll hear include\u00a0crayon \u00e0 papier, crayon gris,\u00a0<\/em>or even\u00a0une mine <\/em>all of which are\u00a0pencils<\/em>; and torchon, chiffon, serpilli\u00e8re, pi\u00e8ce, <\/em>or even wassingue<\/em> for a rag.<\/em><\/div>\n

* Notice that the word\u00a0personnalit\u00e9<\/em> is feminine even when it is referring (as it does here) to a male celebrity.<\/p>\n
