{"id":31216,"date":"2019-03-26T05:30:24","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T04:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=31216"},"modified":"2019-03-17T22:52:46","modified_gmt":"2019-03-17T21:52:46","slug":"france_le_grand_paris","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/france_le_grand_paris\/","title":{"rendered":"France and le Grand Paris"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few weeks ago as I was exploring <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-culture-what-do-the-french-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the public opinion research from IFOP<\/a>, one of the studies that caught my attention was an examination from last December of public perceptions of the <b>ensemble d&#8217;initiatives connues sous le terme du Grand Paris<\/b> (<em>group of initiatives known as the Great \/ the Big Paris<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31220\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/03\/paris-sunset-france-monument-161901.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/03\/paris-sunset-france-monument-161901.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/03\/paris-sunset-france-monument-161901-350x226.jpeg 350w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le Grand Paris<\/strong> \/ <em>The &#8220;Great Paris&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>First announced in 2007, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grand-paris.jll.fr\/fr\/projet-grand-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">le Grand Paris<\/a> project &#8211; whose primary mission is to ensure that Paris can <strong>&#8220;asseoir son statut de \u00abville-monde\u00bb&#8221; &#8230; tout en pr\u00e9servant &#8220;son histoire et son patrimoine&#8221; <\/strong>(<em>ensure its place as global city&#8230; while preserving its history and culture<\/em>) &#8211; will run through at least 2030 and include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.societedugrandparis.fr\/sites\/default\/files\/carte-gpe_feb2018_en_c_societe_du_grand_paris.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">enhanced regional transportation options to connect more of the surrounding region to Paris<\/a>, development plans to strengthen housing and development in the \u00cele-de-France region, and administrative improvements designed to simplify doing business in and around the city.<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">One of the defining elements of Paris since it&#8217;s completion in 1973 is the <strong>Boulevard P\u00e9riph\u00e9rique<\/strong> or <strong>le P\u00e9riph&#8217;<\/strong> as it is commonly known. This multi-lane &#8216;ring road&#8217; and it&#8217;s 38 <strong>&#8216;portes&#8217;<\/strong> (<em>&#8216;doors&#8217;\/&#8217;gates&#8217;; <\/em>including the western Porte de Champerret that led to Bois-Colombes <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/musings-of-an-ex-expat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">where I lived in France<\/a>) are the entry and exits to the <strong>P\u00e9riph&#8217;<\/strong> that make it quick and easy (<strong>sauf pendants les embouteillages!<\/strong> \/ <em>except during traffic jams<\/em> &#8230; which are sadly too frequent these days!) to get around Paris. Unfortunately it (and the current layout of the Paris M\u00e9tro) also make it hard to connect the bustling heart of Paris with the surrounding towns.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Qu&#8217;en pensent les Fran\u00e7ais?*<\/strong> \/ <em>What do the French think (about the plans)<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>So how is this major initiative being viewed by\u00a0<strong>les Franciliens\u00a0<\/strong>(term for the inhabitants of the region of \u00cele-de-France \/ the region including Paris in the near cities and towns shown in red in <a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/f\/ff\/%C3%8Ele-de-France_region_locator_map2.svg\/langfr-1920px-%C3%8Ele-de-France_region_locator_map2.svg.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this map from Wikipedia.fr<\/a>.)? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifop.com\/publication\/les-franciliens-et-le-grand-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IFOP&#8217;s study<\/a> shows that there is overall strong support for the project, but also that many individuals have concerns about possible negative impacts of the plan.<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Le pour \/ <\/strong><em>The pros<\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Le contre \/ <\/strong><em>The cons<\/em><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"312\">For over 70% of those surveyed, <strong>le projet serait plut\u00f4t une bonne chose<\/strong> (<em>the project is more of a good thing<\/em>) with 68% of those surveyed either <strong>plut\u00f4t ou tr\u00e8s optimiste pour les r\u00e9sultats<\/strong> (<em>more or very optimistic about the results).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td width=\"312\"><strong>Mais en\u00a0<\/strong><strong>m\u00eame<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>temps<\/strong> (<em>but that same time<\/em>) people worry that &#8220;<strong>le d\u00e9veloppement &#8230; entra\u00eenera\u00a0une hausse du co\u00fbt de l&#8217;immobilier&#8221; <\/strong>(<em>the development will result in rising housing costs).<\/em><em> 90% of those surveyed thought it was <strong>plustot probable ou tout \u00e0 fait propable <\/strong>(quite or totally probable).<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>* Notice the use of the French pronoun &#8216;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/pesky-pronouns-y-and-en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">en<\/a>&#8216;.<\/em>\u00a0It is used here to represent the entire concept of\u00a0<em>le Grand Paris<\/em>\u00a0outlined in the previous paragraphs. Instead of saying &#8220;<em>Que pensent les Fran\u00e7ais du project le Grand Paris?<\/em>\u00a0the pronoun &#8216;<em>en<\/em>&#8216; lets me just say &#8220;<em>Qu&#8217;en pensent les Fran\u00e7ais?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">Looking for ideas about what to do <strong>dans le Grand Paris<\/strong> (<em>outside of Paris<\/em>)?
