Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Beyond <strong>la grammaire<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-culture-what-do-the-french-think\/\"><strong>la culture<\/strong><\/a>, a big part of speaking <strong>une nouvelle langue<\/strong> (a new language) is the person speaking.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes struggling to speak French correctly has a lot to do with that last point, <strong>la personne qui parle<\/strong> (the person speaking). It&#8217;s not about the frustration of making <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/learning-three-new-words-from-one-mistake\/\"><strong>une faute<\/strong><\/a> (a mistake), but rather the feeling that your real personality isn&#8217;t being heard due to the language barrier.<\/p>\n<p>One area where this is abundantly clear is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-second-degre-sarcasm-in-french\/\">le second degr\u00e9<\/a> et l\u2019exag\u00e9ration<\/strong> (sarcasm and exaggeration).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aVfpzd7bOY\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-second-degre-sarcasm-in-french\/\">Le Second Degr\u00e9 &#8211; Sarcasm In French<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Le Second Degr\u00e9 &#8211; Sarcasm In French&#8221; &#8212; French Language Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-second-degre-sarcasm-in-french\/embed\/#?secret=RM1NRyxhVX#?secret=aVfpzd7bOY\" data-secret=\"aVfpzd7bOY\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I recently had to deal with understanding both new vocabulary and sarcasm when <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/buying-a-glass-in-french-dont-forget-the-drink\/\"><strong>un ami<\/strong><\/a> (a friend) was exaggerating about all the work they still had to do and used <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-game-of-cat-and-mouse-dancing-mice-expression-in-french\/\"><strong>une expression<\/strong><\/a> I didn&#8217;t know:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>J&#8217;ai trop de choses \u00e0 faire ! C&#8217;est une liste longue comme le bras !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Longue comme le bras ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui c&#8217;est une expression. J&#8217;exag\u00e8re un peu mais j&#8217;ai vraiment beaucoup de <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-trajet-and-rising-water-levels-commuting-vocabulary-in-french\/\">travail<\/a> aujourd&#8217;hui.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I have to much to do! It&#8217;s a list as long as my arm!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>As long as your arm?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, it&#8217;s an expression. I&#8217;m exaggerating a little, but I really have a lot of work today.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;ve learned to accept free French lessons from everyday conversations like this and took a mental note of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/cest-du-peu-au-jus-french-expression-for-counting-down\/\"><strong>la nouvelle expression<\/strong><\/a>. However, a little while later I heard someone else start using <strong>le second degr\u00e9<\/strong>, using a very similar expression:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>C&#8217;est gros comme le bras tu sais !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tu veux pas dire que c&#8217;est long comme le bras ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gros, long, c&#8217;est comme tu veux !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>It&#8217;s as big as my arm you know!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Don&#8217;t you mean that it&#8217;s as long as your arm?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Big, long, it&#8217;s whatever you want!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m used to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/its-in-the-pocket-fun-french-expressions-with-la-poche\/\"><strong>les expressions<\/strong><\/a> being pretty fixed in what words they use so I thought it was important to double check.
