Licensed under CC BY 3.0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>L&#8217;image historique<\/strong> (the historic image) may look a little dull after expecting something truly magical from <strong>le trou noir<\/strong>, but there is a lot of cool information radiating out that can be hard to miss.<\/p>\n<p>It may not look like much more than a coffee stain or a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/burning-out-like-a-candle-recently-deceased-in-french\/\">smoldering candle<\/a>, but <strong>la tache floue<\/strong> (the smudge) really is <strong>le trou noir<\/strong> of the distant galaxy, <em><strong>Messier 87,<\/strong> <\/em><strong>une galaxie<\/strong> (a galaxy) named after the <strong>l&#8217;astronome fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (the French astronomer) who first discovered it, <em>Charles Messier<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe l&#8217;image would be more emotional it were from <strong>la Voie lact\u00e9e<\/strong> (the Milky Way). However, taking a moment to think about just how far away <strong>le trou noir supermassif<\/strong> (the super massive black hole) is really helps to appreciate this incredible <strong>petite tache <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-little-french-breakfast-vocabulary-to-start-the-day\/\">orange<\/a><\/strong> (small orange smudge).<\/p>\n<p>I mean, at <strong>53 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/counting-in-french-helped-me-remember-les-nombres\/\">millions<\/a> d&#8217;ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re<\/strong> (53 million light years) away, you would need some seriously <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/long-arms-to-reach-farther-powerful-and-influential-french-expression\/\">long arms<\/a> to reach it!<\/p>\n<p>Now if you&#8217;re like me and missed out <strong>les cours de l&#8217;astrophysique<\/strong> (the astrophysics classes) back <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/22614-2\/\">in high school<\/a>, a lot of the explanations of the amazing image quickly get lost in all the scientific jargon and complicated <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/how-to-write-a-polite-formula-in-french\/\"><strong>formules<\/strong><\/a> (formulas).<\/p>\n<p>Adding <strong>le fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> may seem to just add to <strong>la <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/are-you-shampooing-well-shampoo-and-conditioner-in-french\/\">confusion<\/a><\/strong> (the confusion), but this historic moment also means there&#8217;s no better time to learn <strong>le vocabulaire d&#8217;un trou noir<\/strong> (the vocabulary of a black hole)!<\/p>\n<p>These mysterious forces of nature are <strong>invisible<\/strong> and because of <strong>l&#8217;horizon d&#8217;un trou noir<\/strong> (the event horizon) it would be impossible to ever really see one. <strong>L&#8217;horizon<\/strong> is a scientific term for the point at which there&#8217;s no escaping <strong>un trou noir<\/strong>. It&#8217;s the point of no return for anything that gets too close to <strong>un trou noir<\/strong>, even <strong>la lumi\u00e8re<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That may not seem like a big deal, but without <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/lost-in-the-deep-blue-french-translating-le-bleu-lumiere\/\"><strong>la lumi\u00e8re<\/strong><\/a> ever reaching our eyes, there&#8217;s nothing to see.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cela dit<\/strong> (that said), in some circumstances things end up orbiting <strong>un trou noir<\/strong> and giving off light, if they are far enough away from <strong>l&#8217;horizon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s this fast <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/travelling-in-french-le-nouvel-an-en-belgique\/\">travelling<\/a> stuff orbiting <strong>le trou noir<\/strong> that lets us, in some sense, see it.
