When I was 14, the French car company, Renault, made their entr\u00e9e sur le march\u00e9 am\u00e9ricaine<\/strong> (entrance to the American market).<\/em> My parents even bought two \u2026 matching red and blue Renault Alliances. Sadly, they weren\u2019t great \u2026 and Renault didn\u2019t last long in the US.<\/p>\n

Imagine my surprise then, when I got to France a few years later and everyone I knew rolled in Renault. Unlike in the US, Renault was \u2026 and is \u2026 one of the leading constructeur de voiture<\/strong> (car manufacturers)<\/em> in France. Despite their long history, they don\u2019t take themselves too seriously \u2026 at least judging from this commercial from 2013.<\/p>\n

* \u00ab\u00a0O\u00f9 \u00eates-vous\u00a0?\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> literally means \u201cWhere are you?\u201d.<\/em> The use here of the inverted question and the \u2018en\u2019 <\/em>makes this a question of progress more than location. In a more formal context you might translate \u201cVous en \u00eates o\u00f9?<\/em>\u201d as \u201cHow are you coming along (with that project you\u2019re working on)?<\/em>\u201d
\n** \u2018pi\u00e9g\u00e9(e)<\/em>\u2019 means \u2018trapped\u2019. <\/em>It relates to the noun \u2018pi\u00e8ge\u2019<\/em> (m) which is a \u2018trap<\/em>\u2019. Here it is used figuratively. The (e) is included because the “robber” might be talking to Sophie or Fred.<\/p>\n
