As I\u2019ve shared before<\/a>, I love to drive in France. The post I shared a few weeks ago<\/a> and a recent passage in the book I\u2019m reading got me thinking about car-related vocabulary. This week we\u2019ll look at some key words related to cars \u2026 and some examples of how to use them in context.<\/p>\n

L’id\u00e9e m’est venue …<\/strong> \/ The idea struck me<\/em><\/p>\n

As I mentioned, part of the inspiration for this week’s post came from a book. Until I read it, I had forgotten that in French there is a specific word for ‘car door’ (as opposed to a door door). The passage (“Elle claqua la porti\u00e8re et partit \u00e0 grandes enjamb\u00e9es …<\/strong>” * \/ “She slammed the door and left taking big strides …”) comes from Un Appartement \u00e0 Paris<\/span> by one of France’s most popular contemporary authors Guillaume Musso<\/a> (whose works are available in 41 different languages!) It’s the third novel I’ve read by him and I highly recommend him if you like fun adventures with an other-worldly twist.<\/p>\n

Les voitures ont normalement quatre pneus.<\/strong> \/ Cars generally have for tires.<\/em><\/p>\n

Avant de tourner, il faut mettre son clignotant.<\/strong> \/ Before turning, one must turn on their blinker.<\/em><\/p>\n

On dirige une voiture \u00e0 l’aide du volant.<\/strong> \/ One controls the car with the steering wheel.<\/em><\/p>\n

Quand il pleut, les essuie-glaces permettent de nettoyer le pare-brise.<\/strong> \/ When it rains, the windshield wipers keep the windshield clean.<\/em><\/p>\n

En Angleterre on appelle ‘le coffre’ ‘the boot. Aux Etats-Unis on dit ‘the trunk’.<\/strong> \/ In England they call ‘le coffre’ ‘ the boot’. In the US they say ‘the trunk’.<\/em><\/p>\n

* Notice the use of the more literary\u00a0pass\u00e9 simple<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n
