My daily routine has become amazingly regular over the past couple of months. Many people \u00e0 Paris<\/strong> (in Paris) have a fun little rhyme<\/a> for that monotonous cycle of working, commuting, and sleeping:<\/p>\n

M\u00e9tro<\/a>, boulot, dodo<\/strong>
\nSubway, work, sleep<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The morning stretch of my daily m\u00e9tro, boulot, dodo<\/strong> <\/em>journey was recently slightly altered when I went to order my usual morning<\/a> coffee. I walked into le caf\u00e9<\/strong> (the cafe) and immediately went into autopilot:<\/p>\n

Bonjour, \u00e7a va ?<\/strong>
\nBonjour, \u00e7a va et vous ?<\/strong>
\n\u00c7a va. Alors, un allong\u00e9 s’il vous pla\u00eet.<\/strong>
\nD’accord. Veillez attendre juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9, s’il vous pla\u00eet.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hello, how are you?<\/em>
\nHello, I’m fine and you?<\/em>
\nI’m fine. So, a long black<\/a> please.<\/em>
\nAlright. Please wait to the side please.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As I moved aside to wait, I heard the barista shout my order to son coll\u00e8gue<\/a><\/strong> (their coworker), except what I heard wasn’t what I ordered:<\/p>\n

Un Alain Grey<\/em> !<\/strong>
\nAn Alan Grey!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Shocked out of my usual morning zombie state of mind, I quickly caught the attention of le barista<\/strong><\/a> (the barista) to fix the oh so important order.<\/p>\n

Excusez-moi ! Je voulais un allong\u00e9…<\/strong>
\nOui, un Alain Grey<\/em>.<\/strong>
\nNon ! Un a-long-g\u00e9<\/em> !<\/strong>
\nAh, je suis d\u00e9sol\u00e9 monsieur.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Excuse me! I wanted an allong\u00e9…<\/em>
\nYes, an Alan Grey.<\/em>
\nNo! An a-long-g\u00e9!<\/em>
\nAh, I’m sorry sir.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

My order was fixed, but I felt slightly embarrassed mon accent<\/strong><\/a> (my accent) had made things more difficult.<\/p>\n

I was also a little confused because I had no idea what un Alain Grey<\/strong> <\/em>was even supposed to be!<\/p>\n

When I picked up my order, I decided to ask le barista<\/strong> about the mysterious morning drink<\/a> in order to better understand what I had accidentally ordered.<\/p>\n

Voici votre allong\u00e9.<\/strong>
\nMerci ! Et en fait, tout \u00e0 l’heure quand je l’ai command\u00e9 vous avez entendu un Alain G<\/em><\/strong>rey<\/em> ?<\/strong>
\nUn Alain Grey<\/em> ?<\/strong>
\nOui ? C’est ce que vous avez dit \u00e7a \u00e0 votre coll\u00e8gue<\/a> ?<\/strong>
\nNon… En fait je pensais que vous aviez command\u00e9 un Earl Grey.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here’s your allong\u00e9.<\/em>
\nThank you! And actually, earlier when I ordered it you heard an Alan Grey?<\/em>
\nAn Alan grey?<\/em>
\nYes? That’s what you said to your coworker?<\/em>
\nNo… Actually I thought you had ordered an Earl Grey.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It was like les feux d’artifices<\/strong><\/a> (fireworks) in my mind as I realized I misheard my mistaken order!<\/p>\n

The whole situation was somewhat awkward, but the real lesson was in not being afraid to make mistakes and then ask about them. Even if it’s embarrassing, learning from simple errors and misunderstandings is a big part of learning la langue de Moli\u00e8re<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
