Many people <strong>\u00e0 Paris<\/strong> (in Paris) have a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/cest-du-peu-au-jus-french-expression-for-counting-down\/\">fun little rhyme<\/a> for that monotonous cycle of working, commuting, and sleeping:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/waves-in-paris-le-metro-is-flooded\/\">M\u00e9tro<\/a>, boulot, dodo<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>Subway, work, sleep<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The morning stretch of my daily <em><strong>m\u00e9tro, boulot, dodo<\/strong> <\/em>journey was recently slightly altered when I went to order my usual <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/having-a-fat-morning-sleeping-late-in-french\/\">morning<\/a> coffee. I walked into <strong>le caf\u00e9<\/strong> (the cafe) and immediately went into autopilot:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Bonjour, \u00e7a va ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Bonjour, \u00e7a va et vous ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00c7a va. Alors, un allong\u00e9 s&#8217;il vous pla\u00eet.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>D&#8217;accord. Veillez attendre juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9, s&#8217;il vous pla\u00eet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hello, how are you?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Hello, I&#8217;m fine and you?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;m fine. So, a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/looking-into-un-trou-noir-black-holes-in-french\/\">long black<\/a> please.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Alright. Please wait to the side please.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I moved aside to wait, I heard the barista shout my order to <strong>son <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/early-mornings-and-tired-eyes-sleepy-french-expression\/\">coll\u00e8gue<\/a><\/strong> (their coworker), except what I heard wasn&#8217;t what I ordered:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Un <em>Alain Grey<\/em> !<\/strong><br \/>\n<em>An Alan Grey!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Shocked out of my usual morning zombie state of mind, I quickly caught the attention of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-weird-al-oldelaf-et-monsieur-d\/\"><strong>le barista<\/strong><\/a> (the barista) to fix the oh so important order.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Excusez-moi ! Je voulais un allong\u00e9&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui, un <em>Alain Grey<\/em>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Non ! Un <em>a-long-g\u00e9<\/em> !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ah, je suis d\u00e9sol\u00e9 monsieur.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Excuse me! I wanted an allong\u00e9&#8230;<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, an Alan Grey.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>No! An a-long-g\u00e9!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah, I&#8217;m sorry sir.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My order was fixed, but I felt slightly embarrassed <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/uncle-fingernail-mispronouncing-oncle-and-delivering-good-news\/\"><strong>mon accent<\/strong><\/a> (my accent) had made things more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>I was also a little confused because I had no idea what <em><strong>un Alain Grey<\/strong> <\/em>was even supposed to be!<\/p>\n<p>When I picked up my order, I decided to ask <strong>le barista<\/strong> about the mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-little-french-breakfast-vocabulary-to-start-the-day\/\">morning drink<\/a> in order to better understand what I had accidentally ordered.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Voici votre allong\u00e9.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Merci ! Et en fait, tout \u00e0 l&#8217;heure quand je l&#8217;ai command\u00e9 vous avez entendu un <em>Alain G<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>rey<\/em> ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Un <em>Alain Grey<\/em> ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui ? C&#8217;est ce que vous avez dit \u00e7a \u00e0 votre <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/drumming-up-new-vocabulary-talking-about-la-batterie-in-french\/\">coll\u00e8gue<\/a> ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Non&#8230; En fait je pensais que vous aviez command\u00e9 un Earl Grey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Here&#8217;s your allong\u00e9.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Thank you! And actually, earlier when I ordered it you heard an Alan Grey?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>An Alan grey?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes? That&#8217;s what you said to your coworker?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>No&#8230; Actually I thought you had ordered an Earl Grey.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was like <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-14th-of-july-french-fireworks\/\"><strong>les feux d&#8217;artifices<\/strong><\/a> (fireworks) in my mind as I realized I misheard my mistaken order!<\/p>\n<p>The whole situation was somewhat awkward, but the real lesson was in not being afraid to make mistakes and then ask about them.
