Most of my experiences though have revolved around the Old City. And while I still <strong>adore<\/strong> (<em>adore<\/em> \u2026 it&#8217;s a cognate!) the Chateau Frontenac, le Petit Champlain, and la Place Royale, on a recent trip to the city for a family event, I got to discover a whole new side of the city \u2026 When you get out of <strong>le vieux Qu\u00e9bec<\/strong> (<em>Old Quebec<\/em>), there is a lot that is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/in-the-eye-of-the-beholder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>nouveau<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We spent our trip to Canada with our cousins. It was the first time we stayed in anyone&#8217;s house, and being on the younger side, they live in the hip part of the city. Here are just a few of the great things we discovered on our recent trip.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rue St. Joseph<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you like shopping &#8230; and dining &#8230; the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ville.quebec.qc.ca\/en\/citoyens\/patrimoine\/quartiers\/saint_roch\/interet\/rue_saint_joseph.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> rue St. Joseph<\/strong><\/a> (<em>St. Joseph Street<\/em>) in the lower city is where you&#8217;ll want to be. From\u00a0<strong>des vieux livres<\/strong> (<em>old books)<\/em> to\u00a0<b>des v\u00eatements d&#8217;autrefois\u00a0<\/b>(<em>vintage clothing<\/em>) to\u00a0<strong>la derni\u00e8re mode\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>the latest fashion<\/em>) you can find something for everyone in the\u00a0<strong>boutiques<\/strong> (<em>stores<\/em>) that line this grand old avenue. In terms of restaurants, you can also find\u00a0<strong>de quoi satisfaire tous les gouts\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>something for every taste)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Microbrasserie culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Si vous aimez la bi\u00e8re<\/strong> (<em>If you like beer<\/em>), there&#8217;s never been a better time to visit Qu\u00e9bec. There are\u00a0<strong>des microbrasseries<\/strong> (<em>microbrew pubs)<\/em> popping up all over the city. If you like the new style of hoppy IPA &#8230; or if you prefer a non-alcoholic locally made Kombucha, you can find something to quench your thirst on almost every <strong>coin de rue<\/strong> (<em>street corner).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some new music<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For your listening pleasure, here are two artists (and three songs) I discovered on our trip representing the sounds of Francophone Canada.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/U-TSnuOGeyw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Charlotte Cardin Fous n&#8217;importe o\u00f9<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Crazy everywhere<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/CiC2jTwGmIc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jean Leloup Balade \u00e0 Toronto<\/strong><\/a> (<em>Journey to Toronto<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/56nPyaTXpG0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jean Leloup Je joue de la guitare<\/strong><\/a> (<em>I play guitar<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shopping bis<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/food-shopping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In last week&#8217;s post<\/a>, I talked about shopping in France. Shopping in Qu\u00e9bec can be very similar (The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mvpq.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>March\u00e9 du Vieux Port<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>The Old Port Market<\/em><\/a> is still one of my favorite destinations!). In all that time, I&#8217;ve never had poutine (the Qu\u00e9becois specialty of\u00a0<strong>frites, fromage en grains, et de la sauce brune\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>French fries, cheese curds, and gravy<\/em>). Well, I can no longer claim ignorance.
