I also enjoyed returning during my junior year (3<sup>rd<\/sup> year) <strong>\u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9<\/strong> (<em>in college*<\/em>). Reading <a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/2ZIlqot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recent New York Times article<\/a>, I learned that that was just one thing I shared with the late Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31420\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/07\/Charles_Soulier_Panorama_de_Paris_-_Pris_de_la_tour_Saint_Jacques_ca._1865.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"222\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">This isn&#8217;t the first grab bag of news highlights I&#8217;ve shared. I always enjoy wrapping up a variety of items that highlight French language and culture like:<br \/>\nMy <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-few-of-my-favorite-things\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first anniversary as a blogger for Transparent Language<\/a>,<br \/>\nThis more <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-language-learning-new-words\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">recent review of fun vocabulary and my favorite French podcasts<\/a>, or<br \/>\nThe original <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/potpourri\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">potpourri<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Une (deuxi\u00e8me) ann\u00e9e en France<\/strong> \/ <em>A (second) year in France<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Like Jackie, my college didn\u2019t offer a study abroad program in France, so I had to turn to another school. I applied to and was lucky enough to be admitted to the Columbia University program in Paris housed at <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcenters.columbia.edu\/content\/reid-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reid Hall<\/a>. I wish at the time I\u2019d had some idea of the illustrious history to the <strong>lieu<\/strong> (<em>location \/ site<\/em>) or of the school\u2019s <strong>directrice <\/strong>(<em>director,<\/em> or <em>principal<\/em> if speaking about a lower school), <a href=\"https:\/\/globalcenters.columbia.edu\/content\/danielle-haase-dubosc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danielle Haase-Dubosc<\/a>, who made my year so special &#8230; but like many <strong>jeunes de l\u2019\u00e9poque<\/strong> (<em>young people of the time<\/em>) I was oblivious to so much.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ailleurs \u00e0 la une<\/strong> \/ <em>In other news <\/em>(lit.<em> Elsewhere on page one<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c7a y est! La <a href=\"https:\/\/actu.fr\/bretagne\/taupont_56249\/pres-ploermel-si-vous-dormiez-loree-champs-dhortensias_24861258.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gite de ma belle-fille<\/a> est enfin ouverte au public\u00a0!<\/strong> (<em>Finally\u00a0! My step-daughter\u2019s guest house is open!<\/em>) As the title of the article says: <strong>Et si vous dormiez \u00e0 l\u2019or\u00e9e des champs d\u2019hortensias\u00a0?<\/strong> (<em>What if you could sleep along fields of hydrangeas?<\/em>). \u201c<strong>C\u2019est d\u00e9sormais possible \u00e0 Taupont.\u201d<\/strong> (<em>It\u2019s now possible in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taupont\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taupont<\/a>.) <\/em><\/p>\n<p>While her mother and I separated many years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-perfect-trip\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anne-Laure and her family are still an important part of my family<\/a>. I am so happy and even a little bit <strong>fier <\/strong>(<em>proud<\/em>) of the success that she <strong>et son mari<\/strong> (<em>and her husband<\/em>) have had developing their business.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Si jamais vous vous trouvez dans le coin, je vous garantis un bon accueil\u00a0!<\/strong> (<em>If you are ever in the area, I assure you\u2019ll find a warm welcome!<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Et pour finir<\/strong> \/ <em>Finally<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.louvre.fr\/progtems\/la-pyramide-du-louvre-fete-ses-30-ans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pyramide du Louvre<\/strong><\/a> was opened 30 years ago, many people hated it. Today it is almost as emblematic of Paris (almost!) as the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame. It makes me wonder what people would think about such<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LM09Zgm0SYg&amp;fbclid=IwAR3IyL0Yfy2dl7IwX6iN4-dIFRdNkxFRleiNqXjMopR4dseDpW6uWVF4_TY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> a modern reinterpretation of Notre-Dame<\/a> following <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/notre-dame-de-paris-avant-le-feu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the fire that destroyed the roof<\/a> <strong>il y a plusieurs mois<\/strong> (<em>a few months ago<\/em>). Personally, I love the idea.\u00a0<strong>Qu&#8217;en pensez-vous?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Et &#8230; \/\u00a0<\/strong><em>And &#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After I wrapped, I came across two other updates that should be covered. First:\u00a0<strong>Il fait chaud!<\/strong> <em>It is hot!<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>Parts of France are experiencing a <em>heatwave<\/em> (<strong>canicule<\/strong>) &#8230; it is so hot that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.francetvinfo.fr\/meteo\/canicule\/canicule-53-departements-places-en-vigilance-orange_3505689.html#xtor=EPR-744-[newsletterjt]-20190624-[sujet2]\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">they&#8217;re even handing out water in the subway in Paris<\/a>. And of course, don&#8217;t miss the upcoming\u00a0<strong>confrontation entres la France et les Etats-Unis<\/strong> (<em>confrontation between France and the United States<\/em>) at the Soccer World Cup\u00a0<strong>jeudi<\/strong> (<em>Thursday).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>* <em>N\u2019oubliez pas<\/em> (<em>Don\u2019t forget<\/em>) that the word <em>college<\/em> is <em>un faux ami<\/em> (<em>a false friend<\/em>) in French.
