As you know, I had the great privilege of studying in France au lyc\u00e9e <\/strong><\/a>(in high school<\/em>). I also enjoyed returning during my junior year (3rd<\/sup> year) \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9<\/strong> (in college*<\/em>). Reading a recent New York Times article<\/a>, I learned that that was just one thing I shared with the late Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy.<\/p>\n

This isn’t the first grab bag of news highlights I’ve shared. I always enjoy wrapping up a variety of items that highlight French language and culture like:

Une (deuxi\u00e8me) ann\u00e9e en France<\/strong> \/ A (second) year in France<\/em><\/p>\n

Like Jackie, my college didn\u2019t offer a study abroad program in France, so I had to turn to another school. I applied to and was lucky enough to be admitted to the Columbia University program in Paris housed at Reid Hall<\/a>. I wish at the time I\u2019d had some idea of the illustrious history to the lieu<\/strong> (location \/ site<\/em>) or of the school\u2019s directrice <\/strong>(director,<\/em> or principal<\/em> if speaking about a lower school), Danielle Haase-Dubosc<\/a>, who made my year so special … but like many jeunes de l\u2019\u00e9poque<\/strong> (young people of the time<\/em>) I was oblivious to so much.<\/p>\n

Ailleurs \u00e0 la une<\/strong> \/ In other news <\/em>(lit. Elsewhere on page one<\/em>)<\/p>\n

\u00c7a y est! La gite de ma belle-fille<\/a> est enfin ouverte au public\u00a0!<\/strong> (Finally\u00a0! My step-daughter\u2019s guest house is open!<\/em>) As the title of the article says: Et si vous dormiez \u00e0 l\u2019or\u00e9e des champs d\u2019hortensias\u00a0?<\/strong> (What if you could sleep along fields of hydrangeas?<\/em>). \u201cC\u2019est d\u00e9sormais possible \u00e0 Taupont.\u201d<\/strong> (It\u2019s now possible in Taupont<\/a>.) <\/em><\/p>\n

While her mother and I separated many years ago, Anne-Laure and her family are still an important part of my family<\/a>. I am so happy and even a little bit fier <\/strong>(proud<\/em>) of the success that she et son mari<\/strong> (and her husband<\/em>) have had developing their business.<\/p>\n

Et pour finir<\/strong> \/ Finally<\/em><\/p>\n

When the Pyramide du Louvre<\/strong><\/a> was opened 30 years ago, many people hated it. Today it is almost as emblematic of Paris (almost!) as the Eiffel Tower or Notre Dame. It makes me wonder what people would think about such a modern reinterpretation of Notre-Dame<\/a> following the fire that destroyed the roof<\/a> il y a plusieurs mois<\/strong> (a few months ago<\/em>). Personally, I love the idea.\u00a0Qu’en pensez-vous?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Et … \/\u00a0<\/strong>And …<\/em><\/p>\n

After I wrapped, I came across two other updates that should be covered. First:\u00a0Il fait chaud!<\/strong> It is hot!<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Parts of France are experiencing a heatwave<\/em> (canicule<\/strong>) … it is so hot that they’re even handing out water in the subway in Paris<\/a>. And of course, don’t miss the upcoming\u00a0confrontation entres la France et les Etats-Unis<\/strong> (confrontation between France and the United States<\/em>) at the Soccer World Cup\u00a0jeudi<\/strong> (Thursday).<\/em><\/p>\n

* N\u2019oubliez pas<\/em> (Don\u2019t forget<\/em>) that the word college<\/em> is un faux ami<\/em> (a false friend<\/em>) in French. An American college comes after high school (le lyc\u00e9e<\/em>) while college<\/em> in French refers to the middle school years between l\u2019\u00e9cole primaire <\/em>and le lyc\u00e9e<\/em>.<\/p>\n
