Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While today is the big <em>national holiday<\/em> for <strong>les \u00c9tats-Unis<\/strong> (the United States), nearly every country has an important <strong>f\u00eate<\/strong> (holiday) centered around their national identity in some way or another.<\/p>\n<p>Here <strong>en France<\/strong> <em><strong>le 14 juillet<\/strong> <\/em>(Bastille Day, <em>literally: July 14th<\/em>) is still 10 days away, but people are already getting excited for all <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/the-14th-of-july-french-fireworks\/\">les feux d&#8217;artifices<\/a> et les d\u00e9fil\u00e9s<\/strong> (fireworks and parades).<\/p>\n<p>While <strong>les dates<\/strong> (the dates) may be more than a week apart and <strong>l&#8217;histoire <\/strong>(the history) completely different, there are still some fun connections between <em>the 4th of July<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/why-bastille-day-is-not-really-bastille-day\/\"><em><strong>le 14 juillet<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>USA : Le jour de l\u2019Ind\u00e9pendance, la f\u00eate nationale<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>France : La f\u00eate nationale, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-14-juillet-and-les-3-suisses\/\">le 14 juillet<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>USA: Independence Day, the 4th of July<\/em><br \/>\n<em>France: Bastille Day<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Notice how both days can be called <em><strong>f\u00eate nationale<\/strong> (National Day)<\/em> in French. Beyond <strong>les feux d&#8217;artifices<\/strong> and all the fun with family and friends, the similar names led <strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> (my coworker) to make a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-lessons-hiding-in-un-cafe-coffee-order-mistakes\/\">simple mistake<\/a> in English:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Salut John ! Tu es pr\u00eat pour ta <em>National Day<\/em> ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hi John! Are you ready for your National Day?<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, they really did say <em>National Day<\/em> in English while everything else was in French. It&#8217;s not uncommon for <strong>les Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> (French people) to add English words to French sentences, especially for idea deeply connected to an English speaking culture like <em>the 4th of July<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It can sometimes feel like teasing or <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-second-degre-sarcasm-in-french\/\"><strong>le second degr\u00e9<\/strong><\/a> (sarcasm), but it&#8217;s important to remember that it&#8217;s actually coming from a place of friendship.<\/p>\n<p>Saying <em>National Day<\/em> in itself was however a funny mistake I wasn&#8217;t going to led slide after saying so many <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/hows-it-waxing-silly-french-slang\/\">silly things<\/a> <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> to <strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Haha, oui ! Mais tu sais, on dit pas <em>National Day<\/em> aux \u00c9tats-Unis.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ah ouais ? Tu dis quoi alors ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On dit <em>the 4th of July<\/em> ou <em>Independence Day<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Haha, yes! But you know, we don&#8217;t say National Day in the United States.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah yeah? What do you say then?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>We say the 4th of July or Independence Day<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong> was a little embarrassed, but happy to learn something new.
