Licensed under CC0.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sometimes there are multiple words <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> for something that only has one word in English. That can get confusing when you need to figure out how to separate a single word into 2 ideas.<\/p>\n<p>I recently wrote about an example here on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/\">French blog<\/a> going over the difference between <strong><em>le tambour<\/em> <\/strong>and <strong><em>la batterie<\/em> <\/strong>and the frustration that comes with learning those words when in English they&#8217;re just <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/drumming-up-new-vocabulary-talking-about-la-batterie-in-french\/\"><em>drums<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"r15MxjBpFe\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/drumming-up-new-vocabulary-talking-about-la-batterie-in-french\/\">Drumming Up New Vocabulary &#8211; Talking About La Batterie In French<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" title=\"&#8220;Drumming Up New Vocabulary &#8211; Talking About La Batterie In French&#8221; &#8212; French Language Blog\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/drumming-up-new-vocabulary-talking-about-la-batterie-in-french\/embed\/#?secret=3wBCFzDlM1#?secret=r15MxjBpFe\" data-secret=\"r15MxjBpFe\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cependant<\/strong> (however), even if it&#8217;s difficult at first, once you get the hang of <strong>le nouveau vocabulaire <\/strong>(the new vocabulary) you really miss them <strong>en anglais<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>A less <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/take-a-voyage-to-the-80s-french-retro-music\/\">musical<\/a> example recently came up <strong>au bureau<\/strong> (at the office) while I was taking <strong>une pause<\/strong> (a break) and wanted <strong>du th\u00e9<\/strong> (some tea). It was already late in the afternoon so I really didn&#8217;t want anything with caffeine in it, but wasn&#8217;t sure what kind of tea was available in <strong>la salle de repos <\/strong>(the break room).<\/p>\n<p>Whenever these situations come up I have two options:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1) Admettre que je ne sais pas quelque chose.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2) Ne rien dire et prendre quelque chose au hasard.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><em>1) Admit that I don&#8217;t know something.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>2) Don&#8217;t say anything and take something randomly.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Option one can be <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/more-mistakes-thinking-in-english\/\">embarrassing<\/a> and doesn&#8217;t always work, but option two means I&#8217;ll never improve my French!<\/p>\n<p>So like many times before, I prepared myself for <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/learning-three-new-words-from-one-mistake\/\">the embarrassment<\/a> of asking something that was obvious to <strong>les francophones<\/strong> (French speakers):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Salut !<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00c7a va, John ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00c7a va, et toi ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00c7a va.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hi!<\/em><br \/>\n<em>How &#8216;s it going, John?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Alright, and you?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Alright.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After getting through the easy part I could already feel my heart start to pickup. It&#8217;s crazy how something as mundane as <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-lessons-hiding-in-un-cafe-coffee-order-mistakes\/\">asking<\/a> for <strong>du th\u00e9<\/strong> can become nerve wracking in a new language!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tu sais o\u00f9 est le th\u00e9 ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui, juste l\u00e0, regardes.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ah&#8230; Oui&#8230;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>You know where the tea is?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, just over there, look.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah&#8230; Yes&#8230;.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I looked over at the countless bags of unfamiliar <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/back-to-the-store\/\"><strong>marques<\/strong><\/a> (brands) of tea and was nowhere closer to finding <strong>ma boisson chaude<\/strong> (my hot drink).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mais&#8230; je veux du th\u00e9 sans caf\u00e9ine.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>C&#8217;est-\u00e0-dire ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Comme du th\u00e9 aux fruits ou bien du th\u00e9 \u00e0 la camomille. Ces genres de th\u00e9s existent en France ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00c7a n&#8217;est pas du th\u00e9 !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>But&#8230; I want tea without caffeine.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>What do you mean?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Like fruit tea or chamomile tea. Do these kinds of teas exist in France?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>That isn&#8217;t tea!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was very confused at this point in the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>How are things that are <em>tea<\/em> not <em>tea<\/em>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Tu veux pas dire une infusion ou une tisane ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Une infusion ?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Oui, c&#8217;est une boisson chaude. Par exemple une infusion aux fruits est une boisson chaude sans caf\u00e9ine.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ah ! Oui, c&#8217;est exactement \u00e7a !<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>You don&#8217;t mean to say an <strong>infusion<\/strong> or a <strong>tisane<\/strong>?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>An <strong>infusion<\/strong>?<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Yes, it&#8217;s a hot drink. For example a fruit infusion is a hot drink without caffeine.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Ah! Yes, that&#8217;s exactly it!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was like the stars aligned as I realized that there were different words for what are just different kinds of <em>teas<\/em> in English. With a little more help from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-eggs-expression-difficult-subjects\/\"><strong>mon coll\u00e8gue<\/strong><\/a> (my coworker) I had <strong>mon infusion<\/strong> and was excited to have learned something new <strong>en fran\u00e7ais<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Le th\u00e9<\/strong>: Tea, hot drink made from actual tea leaves.<br \/>\n<strong>L&#8217;infusion<\/strong>: Herbal tea, hot drink with no actual tea leaves.<br \/>\n<strong>La tisane<\/strong>: Herbal tea, mostly interchangeable with <em><strong>l&#8217;infusion<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I read <strong>les d\u00e9finitions<\/strong> and learned <strong>le vocabulaire<\/strong>, the embarrassment quickly faded away and I was glad to have learned something new.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Apr\u00e8s tout<\/strong> (after all), if I had just decided to grab something randomly that looked like what I wanted, I would have never gotten a free <a href=\"https:\/\/education.transparent.com\/mylearning\/game\/ng\/?utm_campaign=Blog%20Post%20CTA%20Buttons&amp;utm_source=blog%20header&amp;utm_medium=learn%20french%20with%20us%202#\/signup\/trial\/choose\">French lesson<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<img width=\"350\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/tea-the-infusion-tisane-french-france-350x231.jpg\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/tea-the-infusion-tisane-french-france-350x231.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/08\/tea-the-infusion-tisane-french-france.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p>Making mistakes and not knowing the right mot (word) is a big part of learning le fran\u00e7ais.
