This year,\u00a0les \u00e9l\u00e8ves fran\u00e7ais\u00a0<\/strong>(French students)<\/em> across the country returned to\u00a0leurs \u00e9tudes<\/strong> (their studies)<\/em> le lundi, 2 septembre<\/strong> (Monday, September 2<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Back to school (la rentr\u00e9e<\/strong>) means back to school shopping. Chaque ann\u00e9e, les parents re\u00e7oivent une liste de fournitures scolaires \u00e0 acheter pour leurs enfants <\/strong>(Each year, parents get a list of supplies to buy for their kids)<\/em>. In addition to\u00a0les crayons \u00e0 papiers<\/strong> (pencils),\u00a0<\/em>les stylos<\/strong> (pens)<\/em>, and\u00a0les feutres<\/strong> (markers)<\/em> (not to mention la trousse<\/strong>\/the pencil case<\/em> to put them all in), parents will need to buy un cartable<\/strong> (book bag\/satchel)<\/em>\u00a0et les livres pour chaque mati\u00e8re <\/b>(and the books for each subject).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

While expenses for the little ones have gone down, according to this report<\/a>, parents of older children (les collegiens<\/strong> \/\u00a0middle-school kids)<\/em> can expect to pay as much as 361 \u20ac.<\/p>\n

In some parts of France, towns without enough\u00a0\u00e9l\u00e8ves<\/strong> (students)<\/em> have been forced to close their schools and combine classes with other rural towns with few students<\/a>. It’s difficult both for the towns and for the parents, some of whom have their kids going off to different towns during the day. For those responsible though, combining classes is a way to save jobs and to keep up the quality of local schools.<\/p>\n

Qu’en pensent les Fran\u00e7ais?<\/strong> \/ What do the French think?<\/em><\/p>\n

A recent poll conducted by Ifop<\/a> for Sud Radio<\/strong> (Radio South<\/em>) of 1,010\u00a0Fran\u00e7ais<\/strong> revealed\u00a0leur opinion<\/strong> (their opinion)<\/em> of the current (and former)\u00a0ministres de l’Education nationale<\/strong> (ministers of Education<\/em>).\u00a0Selon l’\u00e9tude<\/strong><\/a> (according to the study),\u00a0<\/em>the French are divided over their current\u00a0ministre,\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>Jean-Michel Blanquer (41%\u00a0pour<\/strong>, 51%\u00a0contre<\/strong> \/ 41% for, 51% against), mostly along party lines.<\/p>\n

Of all the former ministers, Jack Lang (2000 – 2002) is the most popular with 57% of those interviewed having\u00a0de bonnes opinions sur son action<\/strong> (favorable opinions of his actions).<\/em><\/p>\n
