On my recent trip, I got to discover one of those little hidden gems that make Paris so wonderful &#8230; and I had been walking right by it for years!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/mon-paris-a-moi-my-paris\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">La place des Vosges<\/a> will always be one of my favorite\u00a0<strong>place<\/strong> (<em>public square)<\/em> in Paris. But after watching <strong>un reportage<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31677\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31677-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31677-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">You can watch the <em>reportage<\/em> &#8211; including people playing <em>boules<\/em> &#8211; on YouTube <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/JVSwiQ0tNLM?t=2760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here.<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(<em>a story\/news story)<\/em> recently from <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-architecture-the-louvre-pyramid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Des racines et des ailes<\/a>, I knew that on my next trip to Paris I needed to make my way to la place Dauphine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>La place Dauphine\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-31687\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/bikes-771x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"771\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/bikes-771x1024.jpg 771w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/bikes-264x350.jpg 264w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/bikes-768x1020.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/bikes.jpg 894w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 771px) 100vw, 771px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dating back to the 17th century (1607), la place Dauphine, like la place des Vosges, was built under <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/chartres\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henri IV<\/a>. Originally called place Royale, it was renamed in honor of the king&#8217;s son, the future Louis XIII, and <strong>dauphin de France<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dauphin<\/strong> (which also means\u00a0<em>dolphin)<\/em> is the name traditionally attributed to the heir to the throne of France (at least as far back as the 14th when it was a condition of France&#8217;s absorption of a neighboring principality)<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31677\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31677-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31677-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">A little bit like Prince Charles in England is the Prince of Wales<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-31690\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/wide-1024x390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/wide-1024x390.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/wide-350x133.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/wide-768x292.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stepping into la place Dauphine is like stepping out of the city &#8230; and out of time. While you are just steps away from the Seine, and the traffic of the <b>\u00cele de la<\/b> Cit\u00e9,it feels a world away from the cares of today. When we were there, there were even people playing <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/tu-tires-ou-tu-pointes-an-introduction-to-the-game-of-petanque-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>p\u00e9tanques\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>(or\u00a0<strong>boules<\/strong>) right in the middle of the park.<\/p>\n<p>Situated at the end of the <b>\u00cele de la Cit\u00e9,\u00a0<\/b>la place Dauphine is situated between the <strong>Palais de Justice<\/strong> (home to the highest court in France) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.parisinfo.com\/paris-museum-monument\/71519\/Square-du-Vert-Galant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">parc du Vert-Galant<\/a> (and a statue of Henri IV).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-31688\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/statues-772x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"772\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/statues-772x1024.jpg 772w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/statues-264x350.jpg 264w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/statues-768x1018.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/11\/statues.jpg 871w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>My only regret is that I didn&#8217;t have more time to sit and enjoy.
