December isn’t typically\u00a0la saison des gr\u00e8ves<\/strong> (strike season<\/em>) in France, but this year the month that usually kicks off the holiday season will being with la grande gr\u00e8ve du 5 d\u00e9cembre\u00a0<\/strong>(the great strike of December 5<\/em>).<\/p>\n

What’s the problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

In what could be the largest social movement in years, “plusieurs millions de salari\u00e9s du public et du priv\u00e9 sont appel\u00e9s \u00e0 faire gr\u00e8ve contre la r\u00e9forme des retraites, …” <\/strong>(many millions of public and private workers are called to strike against the planned retirement reforms)<\/em>, as this article from the French newspaper Le Monde<\/a> says. Public transport, schools, the energy sector, gas, garbage, hospitals, air travel, and even the legal system\u00a0risquent d’\u00eatre perturb\u00e9s\u00a0<\/strong>(may all be disrupted).<\/em><\/p>\n

Why? Because, as this article from Les Echo<\/a> says, the government of Emmanuel Macron has been trying to make progress on a campaign promise to “faire converger la quarantaine de r\u00e9gimes de retraite en un syst\u00e8me<\/strong> ‘universel<\/em>‘ “<\/strong> (align the more than 40 different systems into on ‘universal’ retirement<\/em> plan<\/em>) under which everyone would benefit from les m\u00eames droits <\/strong>(the same rights)<\/em> regardless of who, how, and when they originally contributed to the plan.<\/p>\n

While support for the gilets jaunes<\/a> has wavered over the year and more that it has been active, and support for the government of Emmanuel Macron has had its own ups and downs, support for this current action seem unusually strong. According to a recent IFOP survey, as many as 64% of those surveyed<\/a> were supportive of the planned\u00a0gr\u00e8ves\u00a0<\/strong>(strikes).<\/em><\/p>\n

What’s your grandfather got to do with it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The planned reforms, already unpopular with many working class French, were not helped by some recent news that a plan to only apply the new rules going forward may have been scrapped. Reading about it<\/a> was the first time that I ever encountered the common English phrase “grandfather clause<\/em>” in French (la clause du grand-p\u00e8re<\/strong>).<\/p>\n
