I say it&#8217;s never too late as long as you apply yourself. This week, I thought we&#8217;d take a break from the holidays<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31729\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31729-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31729-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\"> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-current-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the strikes<\/a>, which sadly have lasted now almost two weeks, continuing to cause chaos across France<\/span> and look at three French words that will help hone your listening and speaking skills.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-31733\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/12\/apple-blur-bright-close-up-588587-350x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/12\/apple-blur-bright-close-up-588587-350x263.jpg 350w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/12\/apple-blur-bright-close-up-588587.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>La Pomme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>J&#8217;aime bien les pommes. I try to eat one every day.) <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>La Paume<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I was\u00a0<strong>un \u00e9l\u00e8ve \u00e0 l&#8217;\u00e9cole<\/strong> (<em>a student in school<\/em>) studying French history,<em>\u00a0<\/em>I never quite got what apples had to do with the French Revolution. And then I realized that the famous\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Serment_du_Jeu_de_paume\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>serment du jeu de paume<\/strong><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tennis_Court_Oath\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tennis court oath<\/a>) was referring to a sport and not a fruit<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31729\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31729-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31729-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">You see the thing is, the average American seems to pronounce all three words &#8211; pomme, paume, and palme &#8211; exactly the same<\/span>. <strong>Le jeu de paume<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>is indeed a tennis-like sport played indoors, and originally with the\u00a0<strong>paume de la main<\/strong> (<em>palm of the hand<\/em>), hence the name!<\/p>\n<p><strong>La Palme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The most famous\u00a0<strong>palme\u00a0<\/strong>is perhaps\u00a0<strong>la Palme d&#8217;or\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>The Golden Palm<\/em>) awarded each year to the top film at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/cannes-film-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cannes Film Festival<\/a> which some years is quite contested &#8230; though never quite as must as <strong>les pommes d&#8217;or<\/strong> (<em>the golden apples<\/em>) of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alimentarium.org\/en\/knowledge\/apple-discord-and-beauty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greek myth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pronunciation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-23\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-23 aligncenter\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<th class=\"column-1\"><b>Pom<\/b> <div style=\"color:red;font-weight:bold;\">Requested file could not be found (error code 404).
