My colleagues here at Transparent Language have covered some of this before, so think of this week as a review &#8230; with some helpful tips and new vocabulary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C&#8217;est l&#8217;heure<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>It&#8217;s time<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/le-temps-both-time-and-weather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elizabeth taught us way back in 2016<\/a>,\u00a0<strong>le temps<\/strong> can mean both\u00a0<em>the time<\/em> and\u00a0<em>the weather<\/em>. My copy of Le Petit Larousse gives 15 different definitions of the word <strong>temps<\/strong>. The first 14 all relate to <em>time<\/em>. Only the last mentions anything <em>weather<\/em> related! Oddly enough though, we say <strong>Quelle heure est-il?<\/strong> when we want to ask\u00a0<em>What time is it?<\/em> and\u00a0<strong>Quel temps fait-il?<\/strong> to ask <em>What&#8217;s the weather?\u00a0<\/em>(and as per the heading for this section, <em>c&#8217;est l&#8217;heure<\/em> when we want to say\u00a0<em>it&#8217;s time<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Il y a 24 heures dans une journ\u00e9e<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31768\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31768-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31768-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">See <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/how-to-tell-time-in-french\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post<\/a> for a review of key &#8220;time related&#8221; vocabulary words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One of the things I always liked in France was how they use what we would call here in the US military time. Based on a 24-hour clock, military time makes it easy to know if you&#8217;re talking about the morning or afternoon\/evening. Where the US &#8220;restarts the clock&#8221; at noon, in France they just keep counting.<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> for an overview of the basics of telling time in French. And remember: up to the half hour you count up from the last hour (<em>9:10 a.m.<\/em> = <strong>neuf heures dix<\/strong>, <em>5:20 p.m.<\/em> = <strong>dix-sept heures vingt<\/strong>), and that after the half hour you count down (generally) the next hour (<em>9:35 a.m.<\/em> = <strong>dix heures moins vingt-cinq<\/strong> \/ <em>ten minus 25<\/em>, 8:50 p.m. = <strong>vingt-et-une heures moins dix<\/strong> \/<em> twenty-one (or nine p.m.) minus ten<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quel temps fait-il?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the French expressions of time use the verb <strong>\u00eatre<\/strong>, talking about <strong>la m\u00e9t\u00e9o<\/strong> (the weather) requires us to use the verb <strong>faire<\/strong>. Here are some useful expressions for replying when someone asks you\u00a0<strong>le temps<\/strong> (vs.\u00a0<strong>l&#8217;heure,<\/strong> in which case, as described above, they&#8217;re asking you for the time!)<\/p>\n<p><strong>En hiver<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il fait froid.<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>It is cold.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il neige.<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>It is snowing.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>En \u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il fait chaud.<\/strong> \/ <em>It&#8217;s hot.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il fait du soleil.<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>It is sunny.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Au printemps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il pleut.<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31768\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31768-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31768-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">From the verb <em>pleuvoir<\/em>.<\/span> \/\u00a0<em>It is raining.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>En automne<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il fait du vent.<\/strong> \/ <em>It is windy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>En g\u00e9n\u00e9ral<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il fait beau.<\/strong> \/ <em>It&#8217;s nice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Il fait mauvais.<\/strong> \/ <em>It&#8217;s not nice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you want to follow the weather from France, check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCnBToLuuyq7Qn5j7e5BRhaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">YouTube channel for M\u00e9t\u00e9o France<\/a> <strong>pour les pr\u00e9visions<\/strong> (<em>the forecast<\/em>). You will hear lots of expressions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-grammar-back-to-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>future proche<\/strong><\/a> since they are generally talking about the weather to come.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And speaking of it being time &#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>C&#8217;est l&#8217;heure des soldes d&#8217;hiver!<\/strong> (<em>It&#8217;s time for the winter sales!<\/em>) Like the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/les-soldes-dete-summer-sales-in-france\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>soldes d&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9<\/strong><\/a>, the winter sales take place over a fixed time and for a fixed duration. This year&#8217;s shorter four-week period starts <strong>demain<\/strong> (<em>tomorrow),<\/em> January 8, in most of France. But in one region, near the Franco-Luxembourgeois border, <b>les soldes ont d\u00e9j\u00e0 commenc\u00e9 <\/b>\u00a0(<em>the sales have already begun)<\/em>!
