An especially tricky category of pronouns is <strong>les pronoms d\u00e9monstratifs<\/strong> (<em>demonstrative pronouns<\/em>) which we&#8217;ll explore today.<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">You can explore other pronouns in French <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/quickly-become-a-french-pro-of-les-pronoms-pronouns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. And you can read about demonstrative pronouns linguistic cousins, the demonstrative adjective, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/les-adjectifs-demostratifs-demonstrative-adjectives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p><strong>Les pronoms d\u00e9monstratifs\u00a0<\/strong>are useful for answering the question &#8220;Which ______ ?&#8221;\u00a0With one exception (see below) <strong>les pronoms d\u00e9monstratifs,<\/strong> like all pronouns, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/classical-french-grammar-101\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agree in gender and number<\/a> with the noun (or nouns) they are replacing (and like their cousins the adjectives do with the nouns they modify). As such, they come in <strong>masculin<\/strong> (<em>masculine),\u00a0<\/em><strong>f\u00e9minin<\/strong> (<em>feminine),\u00a0<\/em><strong>singulier\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>singular<\/em>), and\u00a0<strong>pluriel<\/strong> (<em>plural). <\/em>They include:<br \/>\n\n<table id=\"tablepress-24\" class=\"tablepress tablepress-id-24 aligncenter\">\n<thead>\n<tr class=\"row-1\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><\/td><th class=\"column-2\"><B>SINGULIER<\/B><\/th><th class=\"column-3\"><B>PLURIEL<\/B><\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"row-2\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><B>MASCULIN<\/B><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">celui<br \/>\ncelui-ci<br \/>\ncelui-l\u00e0<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">ceux<br \/>\nceux-ci<br \/>\nceux-l\u00e0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr class=\"row-3\">\n\t<td class=\"column-1\"><B>FEMININ<\/B><\/td><td class=\"column-2\">celle<br \/>\ncelle-ci<br \/>\ncelle-l\u00e0<\/td><td class=\"column-3\">celles<br \/>\ncelles-ci<br \/>\ncelles-l\u00e0<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<!-- #tablepress-24 from cache --><\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-hr\"><\/div>\n<p>The simple forms (<em>celui, celle, ceux et celles<\/em>) are used to identify a specific item or group of items from all the rest. As in:<\/p>\n<p><strong>J&#8217;aime bien <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ta chemise<\/span>, mais je pr\u00e9f\u00e8re <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">celle<\/span> que tu as mise hier.<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>I really like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">your shirt<\/span>, but I like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">the one<\/span> you wore yesterday better.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>J&#8217;aime bien <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">les histoires d&#8217;aventures<\/span>, surtout <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">celles<\/span> \u00e9crites par Alexandre Dumas.<br \/>\n<\/strong><em>I like <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">adventure stories<\/span>, especially <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">ones<\/span> written by Alexandre Dumas.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8211; O\u00f9 est-ce que tu as mis <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">mon livre<\/span>? &#8211; Lequel? &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Celui<\/span> que je lisais tout \u00e0 l&#8217;heure?<br \/>\n<\/strong>&#8211; <em>Where did you put<span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"> my book<\/span>? &#8211; Which one? &#8211; <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The one<\/span> I was reading earlier?<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-hr\"><\/div>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>formes compos\u00e9es <\/strong>(<em>composed forms)<\/em> replace items or groups of items entirely. Those &#8216;<em>en -ci&#8217;<\/em> refer to things that are closer at hand (think &#8216;<em>this&#8217;<\/em> in English) while those &#8216;<em>en -l\u00e0&#8217;<\/em> refer to things further away or secondary (think &#8216;<em>that&#8217;<\/em> in English).<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31779\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31779-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_31779-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">It can be helpful sometimes to think of the French words <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/here-and-now-more-useful-french-expressions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>ici<\/em> and <em>l\u00e0-bas<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>[Au magasin] Dame: Est-ce que je peux essayer <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">les chaussures rouges<\/span>?
