A few weeks ago we reviewed demonstrative pronouns<\/a> in French. As we discussed, les pronoms d\u00e9monstratifs<\/strong> generally agree in gender and number with the nouns they replace \u2026 with one exception that we\u2019ll look at this week.<\/p>\n

Le cas exceptionnel de ce<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ce<\/strong> (or c\u2019<\/strong> when it comes before a vowel) is a demonstrative pronoun that can replace just about any nominal group or phrase. Unlike it\u2019s other, gendered cousins, ce<\/strong> doesn\u2019t need to agree in gender or number with the thing or things it is replacing.<\/p>\n

Cette chemise<\/span> est celle que j\u2019aime le mieux. C\u2019est<\/span> ma pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e.<\/strong>
\nThis shirt is the one that I like the best. It is my favorite.<\/em><\/p>\n

A little update on a comment from last week<\/a>: In doing a bit more research it seems that the expression visionnage en rafale (<\/em>or visionnement en rafale<\/em>) is more common in Qu\u00e9bec, while in France you\u2019re more likely to encounter the very franglais binge-watching<\/em>, binge-viewing<\/em>, or even visionnage boulimique<\/em> (not a particularly good image, if you ask me!).<\/p>\n
