The news from France<\/a> doesn’t stop (apparently some people think that Emmanuel Macron is more than just a bad president<\/a>) and I do want to touch on the spread of Covid-19 in France, but in times like these, we can all use a little bit of divertissement<\/strong> (distraction)<\/em>.<\/p>\n

L’architecture … hmmm … de Paris?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Everyone knows that Paris is one of the world’s great architectural cities. From Notre-Dame (avant le feu)<\/a> to the Louvre Pyramid<\/a> to the berges de la Seine<\/strong><\/a>, everywhere you look, Paris has something spectacular to see. But would you believe that everything is not always as it seems?<\/p>\n

I recently learned two interesting facts that I wanted to share with you. Paris it turns out has a fair number of buildings that hide secrets behind their fronts1<\/a><\/sup>Their fronts are nothing but fronts! \ud83d\ude09<\/span>.<\/p>\n

First, it turns out that there are a number of buildings in Paris that aren’t what they seem. In a city famous for\u00a0les fa\u00e7ades de ses immeubles<\/strong> (it’s building fronts)\u00a0<\/em>some of the\u00a0fameuses fa\u00e7ades\u00a0<\/strong>are nothing but …\u00a0fa\u00e7ades!<\/em>\u00a0 These fa\u00e7ades factices<\/strong><\/a> (faux fronts<\/em>) hide ventilation shafts for the city’s public transportation system, elements of the electrical grid, and more.<\/p>\n

Another interesting detail you may see walking around the city is des portes ou des fen\u00eatres bouch\u00e9es <\/strong>(blocked doors or windows<\/em>)<\/a>. Why, you might ask yourself, would anyone want to block up their access or their view in one of the world’s great cities (and across France). The answer, as is often the case, is money.<\/p>\n

After the revolution, the French government needed to raise money. One way they did this was through real-estate taxes. But since they didn’t want to have to go into everyone’s home to measure the area, they used the number of windows and doors in a building as a proxy for the space inside!<\/p>\n

And what did the enterprising French do to save money? They blocked up their windows and doors to reduce their\u00a0imp\u00f4ts<\/a> <\/strong>(taxes)<\/em>!<\/p>\n

\"\"Le Covid-19<\/strong> is sadly spreading in France\u00a0comme ailleurs<\/strong> (like elsewhere).\u00a0<\/em>As of\u00a0le 2 mars, 2020\u00a0<\/strong>(March 2, 2020<\/em>) “11 des 13 r\u00e9gions fran\u00e7aises sont touch\u00e9es<\/strong><\/a>” (11 of France’s 13 regions are affected)<\/em>2<\/a><\/sup>Note: If you watch the accompanying video you will hear that “douze (12) des treize (13) r\u00e9gions sont affect\u00e9es<\/em>” … a difference from the printed report<\/span> with 191 cases and\u00a0“trois d\u00e9c\u00e8s” <\/strong>(three deaths).<\/em><\/p>\n

As in many countries, the spread of the virus remains unclear and “les \u00e9pid\u00e9miologistes\u00a0tentent de remonter la cha\u00eene de contact”<\/b> (specialists are trying to follow the transmission pathways<\/em>).<\/p>\n
