Last week<\/a> it still felt like we could ignore what is happening outside, at least here in the US. As France, following la Chine<\/strong> (China),<\/em> l’Italie<\/strong> (Italy)<\/em>, l’Espagne\u00a0<\/strong>(Spain)<\/em>,\u00a0et bien d’autres pays<\/strong> (and many other countries)<\/em> started to ask people to stay home and to keep physical distance, I know I for one wanted to focus on hope for a quick return to normal. How fast things change.<\/p>\n

Le Confinement<\/strong><\/p>\n

France is now officially on lock down.\u00a0D\u00e9sormais\u00a0<\/strong>(From now on\/for now)<\/em> French people can only leave their homes for one of\u00a0cinq raisons<\/strong> (5 reasons).\u00a0<\/em>In order to go out,\u00a0les F<\/strong>ran\u00e7ais<\/strong><\/a> must fill out\u00a0une attestation de d\u00e9placement d\u00e9rogatoire<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(official explanation for an exceptional outing).<\/em><\/p>\n

The only legitimate reasons for going out now are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
D\u00e9placements entre le domicile et le lieu de travail, lorsqu\u2019ils sont indispensables \u00e0 l\u2019exercice d\u2019activit\u00e9s ne pouvant \u00eatre organis\u00e9es sous forme de t\u00e9l\u00e9travail<\/strong><\/td>\nTrips from home to a workplace, when they are required by the work and cannot be replaced by virtual meetings<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
D\u00e9placements pour effectuer des achats de premi\u00e8re n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 dans des \u00e9tablissements autoris\u00e9s<\/strong><\/td>\nShopping trips for neccessities in approved shops<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
D\u00e9placements pour motif de sant\u00e9<\/strong><\/td>\nFor health reasons<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
D\u00e9placements pour motif familial imp\u00e9rieux, pour l\u2019assistance aux personnes vuln\u00e9rables ou la garde des enfants<\/strong><\/td>\nFor critical family needs, to care for vulnerable people or to take care of children<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
D\u00e9placements brefs, \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 du domicile, li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019activit\u00e9 individuelle et aux besoins des animaux de compagnie<\/strong><\/td>\nShort excursions close to home, for individual sports or to address the needs of pets<\/em><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Malheureusement<\/strong> (Unfortunately\/sadly)\u00a0<\/em>not everyone is taking these consignes<\/strong> (rules)<\/em> seriously (as you can see in this video<\/a>) and so the government has had to crack down, closing beaches, increasing patrols, and handing out des\u00a0<\/strong>amendes<\/b> (fines)<\/em> starting at \u20ac 135 (~ 145 USD).<\/p>\n

Il y a m\u00eame un meme qui circule sur Facebook qui dit “Les Fran\u00e7ais … Quand il faut descendre dans la rue il y a personne et quand il faut pas y aller, ils y vont!” <\/strong>(There is even a meme making the rounds on Facebook that says: “The French … when they need to take to the streets there is no one, but when they’re not supposed to, there they go!”)<\/em><\/p>\n

“Au pied de la Tour Eiffel d\u00e9sert\u00e9e, le moindre passant est contr\u00f4l\u00e9. Pour faire respecter les consignes de confinement, la pr\u00e9sence des forces de l\u2019ordre a \u00e9t\u00e9 renforc\u00e9e.<\/a><\/strong>” (At the empty base of the Eiffel Tower, any passerby was detained. In order to enforce the rules, more police officers were added.)<\/em><\/p>\n

Comme si cela ne suffisait pas …<\/strong><\/p>\n

And if that wasn’t enough …<\/em> I know it’s a silly little thing, but I was saddened to learn that the Coronavirus and Covid-19 have caused the cancellation of the Eurovision<\/a> song contest for the first time ever. Maybe – as so many are doing during these times – they’ll be able to come up with some way to bring the artists together virtually for a moment of\u00a0d\u00e9tente <\/strong>(relaxing of tensions).<\/em><\/p>\n
