One thing we\u2019ve never done (at least as far as I can tell) is gone inside. So let&#8217;s look a little deeper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Le cerveau \/ la cervelle <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In French there are two words for <em>brain<\/em>. Well, ok, sort of. It refers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to the literal <strong>c\u0153ur<\/strong> which keeps us alive <strong>en faisant circuler le sang dans nos veines<\/strong> (<em>by pumping blood through our veins),<\/em><\/li>\n<li>to a loved one (<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-singer-anais\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>mon c\u0153ur, mon amour <\/strong><\/a>\/ <em>my heart, my love),<\/em><\/li>\n<li>and to the heart of a place (<strong>au c\u0153ur des Alpes<\/strong> \/ <em>In the heart of the Alps \u2026 )<\/em> or a topic (<strong>Venons-en au c\u0153ur du sujet<\/strong> \/ <em>Let\u2019s move on to the heart of the matter \u2026 ).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">Speaking of hearts \u2026 <strong>c\u0153ur<\/strong> is also the name of the card suit <em>hearts<\/em> <strong>en fran\u00e7ais.<\/strong> The other <strong>couleurs ou enseignes<\/strong> (<em>suits or signs)<\/em> are <strong>carreau<\/strong> (<em>diamond, <\/em>lit. <em>tile, <\/em>or <em>pane<\/em> (as in <em>pane of glass)<\/em>), <strong>tr\u00e8fle<\/strong> (<em>clubs<\/em>, lit. <em>clover\/trefoil<\/em>), and <strong>pique <\/strong><em>(spades, <\/em>lit. <em>pike\/spear<\/em>).<\/div>\n<p><strong>Les poumons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On respire avec les poumons. <\/strong>\/ <em>We breathe with our lungs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le foie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Boire trop d\u2019alcool est mauvais pour le foie.<\/strong> \/ <em>Drinking too much alchool is bad for the liver.<\/em> Unlike the brains, <strong>si vous mangez du foie<\/strong> (<em>if you eat liver<\/em>) it\u2019s the same word (and while many people have decided against it, I must say that I do love foie gras).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Les reins<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Que peut-on dire des reins\u00a0?<\/strong> (<em>What can you say about kidneys?<\/em>)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_32062\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright post-item__attachment\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32062\" class=\"wp-image-32062 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/photo-of-skeleton-2678059-234x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/photo-of-skeleton-2678059-234x350.jpg 234w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/06\/photo-of-skeleton-2678059.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-32062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/@enginakyurt?utm_content=attributionCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=pexels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engin Akyurt<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/photo\/photo-of-skeleton-2678059\/?utm_content=attributionCopyText&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=pexels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pexels<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Les os<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le cr\u00e2ne et les autres os du corps constituent le squelette <\/strong>(<em>The skull and other bones of the body make up the skeleton). <\/em>Which just like in English, is what holds our bodies up \u2026 and can <strong>faire peur lors de <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/nayez-pas-peur\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Halloween<\/a><\/strong> (<em>cause fright at Halloween).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Les muscles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ok, technically, at least according to <strong>mes amis m\u00e9decins <\/strong>(<em>my doctor friends<\/em>) <strong>ce sont les muscles qui nous permettent de tenir debout<\/strong> (<em>it is our muscles that allow us to stay upright!)\u00a0<\/em>It&#8217;s also our muscles that enable us to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-working-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>faire du sport.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">Pro Tip : When you come across a new word in French, you can of course always look it up in the dictionary. The fastest way to clear up any misunderstanding might be to use a translation dictionary. But there are better ideas! See if you can decipher the meaning by looking the word up in <strong>un dictionnaire de la langue fran\u00e7aise<\/strong>.
