The effects of that event (representative of many sadly similar tragic events) have echoed across the US and the world in the weeks that followed. And in the last few days, France has been addressing their own history of race relations and working to deal with the very complicated issues that they raise.<\/p>\n<p>France, like the US, has seen <strong>des manifestations <\/strong>on both sides of the discussion particularly as it relates to <strong>les forces de l\u2019ordre<\/strong> (<em>the police)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>On one side, supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32091\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32091-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32091-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">The term, which translates in French as \u201c<em>les vies noires comptent<\/em>\u201d, has been adopted by demonstrators around the world in the native English<\/span> have rallied around the 2016 death of <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Affaire_Adama_Traor%C3%A9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adama Traor\u00e9<\/a>, a young black man who died while in police custody. Renewed demonstrations were spurred in part by similarities between the two deaths, including, according to some, the victims final words \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/fr\/20200613-en-direct-manifestations-france-violences-policieres-racisme-floyd-traore\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Je n\u2019arrive plus \u00e0 respire<\/strong><\/a>\u201d (<em>I can\u2019t breathe<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>On the other side, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/fr\/20200612-les-policiers-battent-le-pav%C3%A9-sur-les-champs-%C3%A9lys%C3%A9es-contre-la-haine-anti-flics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">police are responding<\/a> to accusations of <em>systemic racism<\/em> (<strong>du racisme institutionnalis\u00e9 ou du racisme syst\u00e9mique<\/strong>) particular since certain <strong>propos<\/strong> (<em>comments<\/em>) from the Interior Minister. They are pushing back against what they see as an unfair <strong>haine anti-flic<\/strong> (<em>anti-police hate<\/em><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32091\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32091-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32091-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\"><em>flic<\/em> is a slang term for the police; you could translate it in English as\u00a0<em>cop<\/em><\/span>).<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">Did you notice the signs in the videos above? Note the similar phrasing but vastly different meaning of &#8220;<strong>Pas de justice, pas de paix.<\/strong> (<em>No justice, no peace.) <\/em>and <strong>Pas de police, pas de paix.<\/strong> (<em>No police, no peace.)<\/em><\/div>\n<p>These topics are vastly more complex than can be addressed in a single blog post. And I am not an expert on race relations, whether here in the US or in France. I certainly can\u2019t claim to have any answers.
