{"id":32205,"date":"2020-08-18T05:29:05","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T03:29:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/?p=32205"},"modified":"2020-08-08T23:50:40","modified_gmt":"2020-08-08T21:50:40","slug":"french-vocabulary-on-the-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-on-the-farm\/","title":{"rendered":"French Vocabulary &#8211; On the farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once upon a time you could find many little family farms in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-town-and-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">towns and villages<\/a> across many parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-music-lets-get-out-of-town\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>le province<\/strong><\/a>. Many of these owned by families who, while not farmers, kept animals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-32212 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/08\/pexels-brett-jordan-840111-308x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/08\/pexels-brett-jordan-840111-308x350.jpg 308w, https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2020\/08\/pexels-brett-jordan-840111.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 animals, popularly known as <strong>les animaux de la basse-cour<\/strong> (<em>the animals of the lower court)<\/em>, provided <strong>des \u0153ufs, du lait, et m\u00eame de la viande<\/strong> (<em>eggs, milk, and even meat<\/em>). And while this type of home farm is far less common today, lessons on <strong>les animaux de la basse-cour<\/strong> (and related farming terms) still make up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mission-maternelle.ac-aix-marseille.fr\/domaines\/langage\/ferme.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">part of the curriculum<\/a> <strong>dans <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/a-lecole\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">les \u00e9coles maternelles<\/a><\/strong> across France.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a little story about a farm I know \u2026 use the vocabulary below to see how much you can understand.<\/p>\n<div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \"><strong>Mes amis ont une ferme. Ils ne sont pas fermiers, mais ils ont un cheval, trois vaches, des poules, des canards, et des dindes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>De temps en temps ils nous donnent des \u0153ufs; des \u0153ufs de poule, mais aussi des \u0153ufs de canard qui sont plus grands que les \u0153ufs de poule et qui ont le jaune tr\u00e8s jaune\u00a0!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Avant, ils avaient une \u00e9norme truie qu\u2019ils appelaient Saucisson (Sausage, en anglais) et un gentil petit bouc, No\u00ebl. Maintenant ils ont des lapins.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>Vocabulaire de la ferme<\/strong> \/ <em>Farm vocabulary<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Une ferme est, en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral, tenue par un fermier ou une fermi\u00e8re<\/strong> (<em>A farm is, generally, run by a farmer<\/em> (m.) <em>or farmer<\/em> (f).)<\/p>\n<p><b>Voici quelques b\u00e2timents de la ferme<\/b> (<em>here are some of the buildings on the farm<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p><strong>La grange<\/strong> \/ <em>the barn<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019\u00e9curie<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"1\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Especially a horse stable.<\/span><strong>, l\u2019\u00e9table<\/strong> \/ <em>the stable<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le poulailler<\/strong> \/ <em>the chicken coop<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dans la basse-cour on trouve<\/strong> (<em>In the lower yard one finds<\/em>):<\/p>\n<p><strong>Les poules<\/strong> \/ <em>chickens<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le coq<\/strong> \/ <em>the rooster<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Des poussins<\/strong> \/ <em>chicks<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019oie<\/strong><sup found in her son\u2019s royal <strong>couches<\/strong> (<em>diapers<\/em>) and made all the rage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=couleur+caca+dauphin&amp;rlz=1C1CHBD_enUS789US789&amp;oq=couleaur+caca+dau&amp;aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0.5167j1j8&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>\u00e0 la cour de Louis XVI!<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0\/ <em>goose<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le canard<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32205\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" wouldn\u2019t find many in France, on an American farm you might also find <strong>des dindes<\/strong> (<em>turkeys<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>D\u2019autres animaux de la ferme sont<\/strong> \/\u00a0<em>Other farm animals include:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le cheval, la jument<\/strong> \/ <em>the horse, the filly<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>La vache, le b\u0153uf<\/strong> \/ <em>the cow, the bull<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le cochon, la truie<\/strong> \/ <em>the pig, the sow<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>La chevre, le bouc<\/strong> \/ <em>the goat (f.), the goat (m.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Le mouton, la brebis<\/strong> \/ <em>the sheep, the ewe<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019\u00e2ne, l\u2019\u00e2nness<\/strong> \/ <em>the donkey (m.), the donkey (f.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Want to learn more?
