Vous pouvez le lire <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/la-rentree-back-to-school\/\">ici<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>(You can read it <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/la-rentree-back-to-school\/\">here.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Aujourd&#8217;hui, je voudrais continuer la conversation\u00a0<\/em>(today I would like to continue the conversation), and I want to look at a typical <em>emploi du temps<\/em> for a\u00a0<em>lyc\u00e9en fran\u00e7ais.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In this <em>emploi du temps\u00a0<\/em>we see classes\u00a0<em>lundi &#8211; vendredi\u00a0<\/em>from 8hoo to 18hoo (8 am to 6 pm). Wednesdays are a half day and the afternoon could be used for sports or other extra-curricular activities outside of school. You can see that generally the schedule of a French student is quite demanding, and you won&#8217;t see any &#8216;study halls&#8217; like in a typical American high school schedule.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Also, note the schedule includes Latin, English, Spanish, and French. It is quite common for French students to study multiple foreign languages. Usually, English is begun at the elementary school level (<em>l&#8217;<\/em><i>\u00e9cole\u00a0\u00e9l\u00e9mentaire)<\/i>, and then a second foreign language is introduced at the middle school level (<i>le coll\u00e8ge)<\/i>. Students have the option to study even more foreign languages in high school (<i>le lyc\u00e9e)<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><em>Voici un peu de vocabulaire:<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>un emploi du temps<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0a schedule<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>un cours<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0a class<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>une mati\u00e8re<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0a subject<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>r\u00e9ussir \u00e0 un examen<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0to pass an exam<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>r\u00e2ter un examen<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0to fail an exam<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>la classe de fran\u00e7ais<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0French class*<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l\u2019anglais<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0English*<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l&#8217;espagnol<\/em> &#8211; Spanish*<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l&#8217;allemand<\/em> &#8211; German*<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>les sciences<\/em> &#8211; science<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>les sciences \u00e9conomique et social<\/em> &#8211; economic and social science<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>les sciences vie et terre<\/em> &#8211; earth science<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l&#8217;histoire<\/em> &#8211; history<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l&#8217;histoire-g\u00e9o<\/em> &#8211; geography<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>la physique-chimie<\/em> &#8211; chemistry<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l\u2019informatique<\/em> &#8211; computer science<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>les math\u00e9matiques (maths)<\/em> &#8211; math<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l\u2019\u00e9ducation musicale<\/em> &#8211; music class<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>l\u2019\u00e9ducation physique<\/em> &#8211; physical education<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>les arts plastiques<\/em> &#8211; art class<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>la cantine<\/em> &#8211;\u00a0the cafeteria<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><i>faire l\u2019\u00e9cole buissonni\u00e8re<\/i>\u00a0&#8211; to play hooky (older expression, like &#8216;hooky&#8217; is in English)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><em>s\u00e9cher les cours<\/em> &#8211; to skip class<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">*In English, the names of languages are capitalized. In French, they are not. These words are only capitalized when referring to the people of that country.
