France, like many parts of the world, is seeing a resurgence of cases of Covid-19 as the cooler weather of l\u2019automne<\/strong> (autumn)<\/em> settles in. In an attempt to get things back under control and to avoid another confinement<\/strong><\/a>, the French government has instituted un couvre-feu<\/strong> in many cities around the country.<\/p>\n

Couvre-feu<\/strong><\/p>\n

Le couvre-feu<\/strong><\/a> (lit. cover fire<\/em>) or curfew<\/em>1<\/a><\/sup>The English word curfew<\/em> actually comes to us from Old French via the Middle English curfeu.<\/em><\/span>, applies to Ile-de-France and 8 other metropolitan regions2<\/a><\/sup>Grenoble, Lille, Lyon, Aix-Marseille, Saint-Etienne, Rouen, Montpellier, et Toulouse<\/span>. While these measures are necessary, shutting down a country even if it’s just temporary is never easy, impacting businesses and people’s lives. Theater performances end early and people are leaving restaurants earlier than ever in a country where the evening often doesn’t get going until late.<\/p>\n
