Donc<\/em>, seeing as there is a atmosph\u00e8re politique\u00a0tendue2<\/a><\/sup>tense political atmosphere <\/span><\/i>\u00a0in the US this week , I wanted to discuss a little bit about the political system in France.<\/p>\n

In France, elections are held once every cinq ans3<\/a><\/sup>five years<\/span>, and Election Day is always held le dimanche4<\/a><\/sup>on Sundays<\/span>.\u00a0<\/em>Their motto is “Libert\u00e9, Egalit\u00e9, Fraternit\u00e9<\/em>” (Liberty, Equality, Fraternity) which finds its origins in the French Revolution.<\/p>\n

France is currently in their ‘Fifth Republic’ which began in 1958. It is a hybrid of a presidential\/parliamentary system. The current pr\u00e9sident de la R\u00e9publique fran\u00e7aise5<\/a><\/sup>President of the French Republic<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is Emmanuel Macron. He is the chef de l’\u00c9tat6<\/a><\/sup>Head of State<\/span>\u00a0<\/em>and the Premier ministre7<\/a><\/sup>Prime Minister<\/span>,\u00a0<\/em>Jean Castex, is the chef du gouvernement fran\u00e7ais8<\/a><\/sup>Head of the government<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Parliament is made up of the National Assembly (the lower house). The National Assembly is located in the Palais Bourbon<\/em> with 577 d\u00e9put\u00e9s<\/em> elected elected by the people, in general elections (\u00c9lections l\u00e9gislatives)<\/i> that take place every five years.<\/p>\n

The Senate (the upper house) is located inside the Luxembourg Palace (Palais du Luxembourg)<\/em>. It has more than 300 senators.\u00a0Senators are elected by other locally elected representatives every five years.<\/p>\n

The President in France serves a 5-year term (le quinquennat<\/i>). The maximum number of terms a president can serve is limited to two. The president is the commander of the military and also\u00a0determines policy with the aid of his Council of Ministers (Conseil des ministres<\/i>). The residence of the President of the French Republic is the Elys\u00e9e Palace (le palais de l’Elys\u00e9e)<\/i> in Paris.<\/p>\n

The President is the one who appoints the Premier ministre. <\/em>The Prime Minister is the one who directs the\u00a0actions of the government and ensures the implementation of laws. The residence of the French Prime Minister is at Matignon House (l’H\u00f4tel Matignon)<\/i> in Paris.<\/p>\n

De fa\u00e7on int\u00e9ressante9<\/a><\/sup>Interestingly<\/span>, <\/em>Emmanuel Macron, having been elected at the age of 39, is the youngest leader in France since Napoleon Bonaparte. Bonaparte was a very successful military leader during the French Revolution, and then Empereur des Fran\u00e7ais10<\/a><\/sup>French Emperor<\/span>.<\/i><\/p>\n
