souliers au peid du sapin<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\"><em>a shoe or pair of shoes beneath (<\/em>lit<em>. at the foot of) the Christmas tree<\/em><\/span> on bottes, ou chaussettes \u2026 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The custom of leaving <em>shoes, boots, or stockings\/socks <\/em>beneath the Christmas tree (or by the fire) goes back to a legend of Saint Nicolas giving <b>des pi\u00e8ces de monnaie<\/b><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\"><em>coins<\/em><\/span> (or in some stories <b>trois bourses d\u2019or<\/b><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"4\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-4\">4<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-4\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"4\"><em>three pouches filled with gold<\/em><\/span>) to save three pour girls from being sold off by their father (to prevent them from dying of hunger!).<\/p>\n<p><b> Aujourd\u2019hui<\/b><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"5\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-5\">5<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-5\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"5\"><em>Today<\/em><\/span> instead of money (or gold!), <b>Le P\u00e8re No\u00ebl<\/b><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"6\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-6\">6<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-6\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"6\"><em>Santa Claus, Saint Nicolas<\/em> (lit. <em>Father Christmas<\/em>)<\/span> will traditionally leave a piece of fruit (<b>une pomme, une orange, quelques clementines<\/b><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"7\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-7\">7<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-7\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"7\"><em>an apple, an orange, some clementines<\/em><\/span>) or <em>candy<\/em> (<b>des bonbons<\/b>) for children.<\/p>\n<p>To fill your <strong>chaussettes de No\u00ebl<\/strong> this year, I\u2019ve assembled a few treats of my own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><div class=\"woo-sc-box  normal   \">First a peek at some seasonally-relevant vocabulary!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">I was this old when I realized that a manger wasn&#8217;t a stable! The English word <em>manger<\/em> comes from the same roots as the French word <strong>mangeoire<\/strong> &#8230; which is not the stable in which Mary and Joseph took refuge in the story of the birth of Christ, but the <em>feeding trough<\/em> that the parents laid their new born son in as the closest thing to a crib they could find in\u00a0<strong>l&#8217;\u00e9table<\/strong><sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote \" data-mfn=\"8\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561\"><a href=\"void(0)\" role=\"button\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-8\">8<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-0000000000002ec30000000000000000_32561-8\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" data-mfn=\"8\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-vocabulary-on-the-farm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>the stable<\/em><\/a><\/span>.<br \/>\nThere are a number of ways in French to say <em>give a gift<\/em>. I find a number of them much more poetic than the basic <strong>donner un cadeau<\/strong>. <strong>On peut faire un cadeau ou offrir un cadeau<\/strong>\u00a0&#8230; <em>make a gift or offer a gift. <\/em>I love the implied idea in making a gift to someone or offering it &#8230; especially since in French the idea of offering comes with the implication that you hope the person will accept it &#8230; like the difference between <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-culture-oh-what-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>donner<\/em> and <em>partager.<\/em><\/a><br \/>\nAnd now on with <strong>les cadeaux!<\/strong><\/div><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vaux in lights<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite chateaux in France is <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-culture-saving-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vaux-le-Vicomte<\/a>. Designed by the same artisans who would go on to create Versailles, it is a perfect jewel box of a chateau \u2026 as you can see in this video highlighting the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Son_et_lumi%C3%A8re\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>son et lumi\u00e8re<\/strong><\/a> being put on in, around, and <em>on<\/em> the chateau <a href=\"https:\/\/vaux-le-vicomte.com\/actualite\/lumieres\/?fbclid=IwAR1oLxzUL-F4mOunTEtLxuE1KovusxaVmu3TaGAeQURFpmRqE_dXxouHvMA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vaux le Vicomte f\u00eate No\u00ebl en couleurs !\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_2Q82VQSsi8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paris qui brille &#8230;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-culture-decorating\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Les Grands Magasins and the Champs-Elys\u00e9es<\/a> aren&#8217;t the only parts of Paris to get their holiday best on. As you might expect in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.transparent.com\/french\/french-music-paris-by-night\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ville lumi\u00e8re<\/a>, sites around the city decorate and deploy special lighting for the <strong>f\u00eates de fin d&#8217;ann\u00e9e<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/quefaire.paris.fr\/113316\/paris-scintille-place-de-la-concorde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La place de la Concorde<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/quefaire.paris.fr\/113406\/paris-scintille-place-de-la-bastille\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">la place de la Bastille<\/a>, et <a href=\"https:\/\/quefaire.paris.fr\/113303\/paris-scintille-sur-le-parvis-de-l-hotel-de-ville\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">le parvis de l&#8217;H\u00f4tel de Ville<\/a> are all dressed up in their holiday finest.
