Take a tad bit of unbridled\u00a0cynisme <\/em><\/strong>(cynicism), a little dose of the desperately\u00a0tragique<\/em><\/strong>, mix up with un<\/em><\/strong> soup\u00e7on <\/strong><\/em>(a hint)of the morbidly discomforting, <\/em>preferablyverging onthe edge of the\u00a0macabre<\/em><\/strong>, or any social “taboo<\/strong>” flavor that tickles your fancy, and you may very well end up with what French Surrealism pioneer and champion\u00a0Andr\u00e9\u00a0Breton<\/a><\/strong> coined seventy years ago as “l’humour noir<\/em><\/strong>“…<\/p>\n

Predating the Columbine Massacre by more than 200 years, the French “Jacobins<\/em>” revolutionaries, noted for their infamously unrestrained “humour noir<\/em>” on a massive scale, may have called this grisly game “Bowling for Guillotine<\/em>” (read ‘Bowling for Guy-o-Thai-ne’…)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Note that it’s a “darkness” of humor that casts a charming contrast with their presumed\u00a0“Lumi\u00e8res<\/em>” (<\/a><\/strong>“Enlightenment”)<\/a>!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since there’s no specific\u00a0recette <\/em><\/strong>(recipee) to make a joke “\u00e0-l’humour-noir<\/em><\/strong>“, here are a few French samples—\u00e0\u00a0deguster avec moderation<\/em><\/strong>(To savor with moderation)!<\/strong><\/p>\n
