Like many, I had hoped that we wouldn’t be talking about Covid anymore. While there are signs of hope, there are concerning signs too especially in Europe. So where is France with Covid one year later?<\/p>\n

Le bilan<\/h3>\n

What does the balance sheet<\/em><\/a> look like one year on? As of March 21, 2020, France had reported 4 282 603\u00a0cas<\/strong>1<\/a><\/sup>cases<\/em><\/span> and 92 305\u00a0d\u00e9c\u00e8s<\/strong>.2<\/a><\/sup>deaths<\/em><\/span> The average daily rate of deaths is down significantly from the peak in\u00a0avril<\/strong>3<\/a><\/sup>April<\/em><\/span> 2020 as well as the second wave in novembre<\/strong>4<\/a><\/sup>November<\/em><\/span>2020, but still concerning enough that France is headed into …<\/p>\n

Un troisi\u00e8me confinement<\/h3>\n

Since they have not seen the reductions in Covid cases they would like, the government of Emmanuel Macron has instituted a third confinement<\/em> across 16 departments for four weeks \u00e0 compter de vendredi 19 mars \u00e0 minuit<\/strong><\/a>5<\/a><\/sup>starting at midnight on March 19th<\/em><\/span>.<\/p>\n

While outdoor travel is allowed during the day within 10 kilometers of a primary residence,\u00a0une attestation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0is still required in some cases … but not in others … leaving the French more than\u00a0a bit confused<\/a>. From where I sit, this nouveau confinement<\/strong> seems a bit more like the earlier couvre-feu<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>that allowed people to leave their homes during the day.<\/p>\n

Le ou la Covid bis<\/h3>\n

Last May Bridgette8<\/a><\/sup>who had just joined<\/a> us here on the French blog!<\/span> shared a post explaining how the Acad\u00e9mie Fran\u00e7aise had declared that le Covid-19 was actually LA Covid-19<\/a>. Turns out that not everyone got the memo!<\/p>\n

According to a recent poll by IFOP\u00a0la question de son genre ne semble toujour pas avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 tranch\u00e9e<\/a><\/strong>9<\/a><\/sup>the question of gender is seemingly still not decided<\/em><\/span>. According to a survey of 1,048 people, over 80% of French people still say\u00a0le Covid<\/strong> … despite the fact that 57% say that “Covid n’est correct qu’au f\u00e9minin<\/strong>“10<\/a><\/sup>Covid is only right when it’s feminine<\/em><\/span>!<\/p>\n

How to explain this discrepancy? For those who lean masculine, 38% say it is simply because that’s what everyone used when the pandemic started. For those who lean feminine, 26% percent do so because the Academy said so.<\/p>\n

Un peu de distraction<\/h3>\n

Let’s end on a lighter note.<\/p>\n

I just finished a wonderful little French s\u00e9rie t\u00e9l\u00e9vis\u00e9e<\/span>11<\/a><\/sup>television series<\/em><\/a><\/span> called Dix pour cent<\/span> (Call My Agent<\/span> in English). Originally airing on the French chaine de<\/span> t\u00e9l\u00e9vision<\/strong>12<\/a><\/sup>tv channel<\/em><\/span> France 2, all four saisons<\/span>13<\/a><\/sup>seasons<\/em><\/span> are available on Netflix. Named for the 10%<\/span> commission that agents collect from their stars, the show tells the story of 4 agents and their assistants at the fictional agence artistique<\/span>14<\/a><\/sup>talent agency<\/em><\/span>, ASK, in Paris.<\/p>\n

If you’re looking for more ways to practice your French skills<\/a> while enjoying some truly beautiful footage of Paris \u2026 and enjoying some truly great guest spots from real French (and one American) movie stars (playing amped up versions of themselves) \u2026 this is a great option for you.<\/p>\n

One note: the French flies fast and furious in each episode. Be prepared to watch the episodes twice, or to leverage the closed captioning (I recommend trying it with the French closed captions on).<\/p>\n

My only regret is that – with just 6 episodes per season – it was over too fast!<\/p>\n
